Cosplay pictures
Please, please stop putting cosplay pictures into articles where they are not appropriate. I remember the lengthy discussions relating to the leotard article; now you have added a similar image to the maid article. Can you tell me why you consider these images to be appropriate illustrations for these articles? -- The Anome 12:38, Nov 28, 2004 (UTC)
- Why aren't these appropriate? For starters, there are no other images of maids available for us to use, so far as I know. Would you not agree that something is better than nothing? Also, when we have many other opportunities to get images of villains and mad scientists, through the marvel of screen captures, we end up with two cartoons. Not only that, but these cartoons are deemed "featured" by the Misplaced Pages community. -- user:zanimum

My impression of you was limited to a vague "been around a long time, and reasonably active". You've changed that in one fell swoop.
- Adding to a WP article an ext lk p't-ing to your own column on a pop-under-ing site is not a minor edit
- Failing to remove that lk when you knew it had stopped being a "regular" column is irresponsible, and also serves to further impeach your good intentions.
- If you're really only in your first term of "Advertising and Graphic Design", your fate is not sealed, but it is already time to be thinking about whether you want to be an art director, and of the kind that your colleagues
- feed with raw meat,
- keep the client from meeting, and
- justify with "his stuff always looks great; never mind whether it means anything."
- or if you're willing to learn the syntax of English and form the habit of proofreading what you sign.
- Nearly all childless, single, teenage kid-TV enthusiasts are incompetent to write under the heading "Family Entertainment"; the incompetent ones include all those who don't realize that the competent ones need to specifically address that credibility problem.
--Jerzy(t) 16:34, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)
- Go to Google. Type "children's television" in. And if you think that's solely from the extra links Misplaced Pages provides, it's been this way since a month or two before that edit. I get absolutely no profit from this column, I solely volunteer.
- When I signed up with Suite, the pop-unders weren't there. Frankly, there were very few ads at all.
- As for the lack of new content, give me a break. Ignoring my school work, I've been too busy contributing to Misplaced Pages, and retrofitting my newly adopted Academy Awards column.
- Also, it seems to me that you're giving me the blame for being public about my other activities. Before a few weeks ago, I would have been "safe" from you, as my personal info was limited.
- What is your problem anyway about the whole "oohhh... you're going to fail!" stuff? Other than a run on sentence, I can't see anything wrong with the syntax of my bio. Even if there was, you are among five people to see the page since the start of the month. Frankly, those others are likely web crawlers. People don't really care about who's giving them the information.
- The point is, my articles on Misplaced Pages and Suite101 are factually accurate, and decisively opinionated. I'm not a media fluff-ball like most other family ent outlets. Dr Toy will give anything the stamp of approval, so her name can be touted in press releases and on the video jacket. I give an honest, unbiased opinion that's rare in the preschool DVD field. This has counted for a lot, and quotes from my article have often been used on the manufacturer's websites. -- user:zanimum
Article Licensing
Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...
- ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
- ...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Misplaced Pages is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.
- Nutshell: Misplaced Pages articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to ] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to ] all my contributions to any ], county, or city article as described below:
- {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} with {{MultiLicensePD}}. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 21:27, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how you would like things dumbed down. What was the confusing part? I'm not sure how else to explain this. -- Ram-Man 21:54, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
- I understood it, but up until you posted this message, I, and most other Wikipedians didn't know that you could dual license articles, and suddenly we have to respond to how we would like them licensed. Possibly a gentler introduction would have been better. I dunno. -- user:zanimum

A Request
Over at Culture of the United Kingdom one of the main things that is stopping us from putting it forward as a featured article candidate is the fact that the art section is so small (one small paragraph). You have listed yourself on Misplaced Pages:List of Wikipedians by fields of interest as someone with an interest in art. Would you be able to pop over there at some point and help us to expand the section please? Many thanks. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 11:53, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Multi-licensed into the public domain | ||
I agree to multi-license my eligible text contributions, unless otherwise stated, under Misplaced Pages's copyright terms and into the public domain. Please be aware that other contributors might not do the same, so if you want to use my contributions in the public domain, please check the multi-licensing guide. |

Your "tarantula"
The picture you put on the tarantula article is a very attractive picture, but it is not a picture of a tarantula. It's a picture of a jumping spiders -- creatures that I've been in love with for the last 50 years. Somebody else had already removed it before I saw it. Where did you get the picture? We may be able to use it on the "Jumping Spider" article somehow, especially if I can figure out the species. (Too bad the view of the upper surface of the abdomen is not clearer, but you've got a beautiful shot of the head. Jumping spiders are the only ones I know of that seem to be aware that somebody is looking at them, and they like to look back. They seem to be as curious about us as we are about them. Kiki
If you remember back a little bit, you were kind enough to test the idea of Kiki with nine kids. You said they were interested in her, as long as she were intelligent. Since then, Kiki has developed into a character that appears on ever few pages in the books, and occasionally interviews real-life scientists, politicians, artists, dancers, zookeepers, what ever relates to the book. These people will be shown in cartoon form, in their work environments. For example, I'm hoping to have "Kiki" interview a NASA scientist or astronaut, or some sort of astronomer, for the debut Solar System issue. Would you be able to run this new role for Kiki past the kids you talked to before, and see if this interests them? The character is in trouble of being eliminated by criticism from other users. -- user:zanimum

AMA
What do you know about the AMA? Is it caput, or is it still actually functioning? -- user:zanimum
- Zani, good question about the AMA -- based on the activity at their requests for assistance page (I forget the name exactly, but it's linked to from WP:AMA) I think it's crawling along at a snail's pace. It would appear that someone called Keith Tyler (I don't know him) is handling most of what few requests arrive. I imagine that it, like the harmonious editing club and dozens of other voluntary associations here, didn't have sufficient gravity to keep itself together. Perhaps it will revive one day. I think it was little used, though, for the basic reason that most people who need help with dispute resolution have already decided who they will trust to give them answers, and so they don't go looking for an "organization" to provide help. The few I ever saw go to the AMA mistakenly seemed to believe that they were acquiring a mediator (and one who would be favorable to them) -- most of them seemed to abandon AMA assistance once they discovered the "actual" dispute resolution procedure. Sorry for the long answer. Did you ask for any particular reason, by the way, or just curiosity? :-) Jwrosenzweig 21:25, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks JW, I was curious because you and I had run the inaugural (and possibly only ever) election for the AMAs. Do you think there should still be an election, being six months after the initial one? -- user:zanimum

Wikisource logo
Heya. I saw your logo for wikisource, very impresive.
It seems like the only real problem with it is the square edges required for the sea. I was wondering, have you considered playing around with a circular background for the sea? Depending on aspect ratios etc, I thought that might look okay. Another idea is to try to draw the sourceberg with an overhead view and use a circular ocean. There's a bit of liberty for creative freedom in that idea as well. CXI 14:55, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Vfd: Simple questions that require simple answers
I am asking simple questions, and I dont get an answer from you. What is the voters population? In order for a Vfd poll to be a valid one, what is the minimum number of voters (as population percentage) that has to cast a vote on it? What is your decision method when you extract the decision from the poll? 2/3 majority? simple majority? other? Finnaly as long as you take a decision, how long this decision is valid and cannot be reversed? I am expecting simple answers from you, in order to stop proposing my own answers to those questions .Vfd policy is a total mess! How I calculate my results? I dont know yet. I have read majority rule, average rule, quadratic rule e.t.c. and I am trying to find out. Iasson 09:50, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Look. We're just like any other democracy here. You hold a vote, basically just an election. If only 0.0001% of the population turns up, so be it. They vote, they decide who's the victor. We can't force anyone to vote. I think I heard there's almost 100,000 registered users on Misplaced Pages, but there's really only 1,000 or so users that have edited in the last month. VfD should be a simple procedure, based on a normal majority. xx users said delete, yy users said keep. If xx is greater than yy, delete the article, if yy is greater, delete. -- user:zanimum

Hi, the referenced image has you listed as the uploader, and it's tagged fair use. NBC's license on that image is:

...so, using it here is a little on the iffy side. If you have a good fair use justification handy, could you add one? If not, we do have a substitute fair use image for Ashlee Simpson so it's not the end of the world. Thanks. iMeowbot~Mw 18:08, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Warning vandals
When reverting a page or template, especially "inthenews", make sure that you put a Template:*test* (without the astericks) on it. If it's something that affects the main page, I personally go straight for Template:*test3* or higher. -- user:zanimum
- There wasn't much point, since I'd blocked the IP immediately after reverting. I think the rather prominent notice saying "IF YOU VANDALISE THIS TEMPLATE, YOU WILL BE ***BLOCKED*** IMMEDIATELY" at the top of Template:In the news is warning enough. Proteus (Talk) 17:51, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, great. I hadn't checked that out. Should still leave something on their talk pages, just in case they vandalise once their block is up, we know to treat them more seriously than others. -- user:zanimum
Johnny Carson image
Apologies for reverting your image changes to the Johnny Carson article without checking to see if the original image had been tagged. I uploaded it (before he died), and thought I had tagged it, but didn't. The only thing I was thinking was, "Why did this guy replace the image with one of arguably lower quality?" I didn't bother to check if I'd tagged the image. The original image is a screenshot of an image from MPTV.net as it appeared on IMDB.com. Looking at MPTV's web page, the terms for use are pretty restrictive, and there's no mention of fair use. Then again, I'm not sure where you could find a better picture of him. "Unique" images qualify as fair use, I think. Do you think it should remain in the article? Not necessarily at the top, but anywhere. --Chrysaor 21:58, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I think we're fine keeping this picture. The only reason I took issue with it was that it was on the front page. Until anyone else goes out of their way to hunt down less that allowable pictures, we should try and keep it. To my knowledge, fair use covers promotional images, screen captures (thus uncontrolable by the creator), and news photos in extreme cases, as they are one-time moments of high-signifcance that simply can't be recreated. In the last circumstance, you have the slim chance of nulling commerical photography's copyrights. Since this photo was recreatable (we had 4 years to get our own picture of Johnny), I think we don't have a hope on this argument. -- user:zanimum
glorious cover
What a slick WQ cover you proposed ! It makes my heart sing. Now just over 6 weeks past the deadline, the contest is over. Please do add the WM logo, or some slight variant, in a corner of the cover; and let me know if you have trouble uploading an uncompressed version to the Commons. +sj + 11:41, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Upload the original in two layers, one with the background and one with the text. If you can use a standard format in which the text layer is still actually text, and hasn't been flattened to an image, that's even better (but not necessary). +sj +
- Thanks for the compliments. I tried to make a format that could be reused for covers, with new colours and Featured Pictures every time. Okay, two things. The original file is at home (I'm at Humber College for the week), so I'll have to create it again, which is fine. Secondly, I did it in vector (Corel Draw), so that I could easily composite the words for all of the languages. Would that be okay if I did it all, and just uploaded the end jpegs or pngs? -- user:zanimum
- The only slightly annoying thing about you doing it all, is that translations trickle in over the days and weeks to come. So then all 30 langs that want covers will have to send you text (in various charsets / fonts that you might not have) and wait for you to render it in Corel... not sure how to make that work. But as long as you also upload a separate background image, you don't have to upload any text layers, and can render all the langs you have fonts for. +sj + 15:29, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- There's only 11 languages that have even started to translate, and I have proper fonts for all of them. Plus, it'll be an easy but worthwhile test for Wikijunior's print editions, to see how easily they can be modified. I don't know, I can definetly let each language do it themselves, but I just wanted to try for quality control. -- user:zanimum
- Great. Do I post a general call for front page text, or would it be better to contact everyone individually? Or is the Foundation mailing list better? Should we allow other Wikimedian languages to reorder the front cover order to their own language's priorities, or maintain the order used on the English? -- user:zanimum
Figure out the english text you'll use, make a page for it on meta under m:Translation Requests/WQ/2/Cover, and leave a note and link to it from TR/WQ/2 . Then people will translate the text. Yes, in the same order; they'll shout if they want to change things for a particular language. +sj + 03:33, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I've recreated the cover in Illustrator. The side bar is a little purer of an orange, and the highlighted articles are a little different, but I feel it remains closely to the same concept. One thing: could we hold a one week vote to see what Featured picture gets on the cover? Just a continuing way to get more community envolvement over all WQ issues.
- Also, is it okay if I create a vector version of the Wikimedia logo? The designer of the WM and Wikiquote logos hasn't edited on EN since September, and even before that was incredibly irregular. While I don't need an amazing quality pic for the cover, it would be handy for us to have such a file for the future. -- user:zanimum
- Oh, I've also got the Dutch and Italian covers laid out, but the Czech, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Japanese, Swedish, and Chinese translations have yet to come. I plan on bugging them tonight.

Stylized Sourceberg
It appears that the stylized "Sourceberg" logo at Wikisource is at least partially your design. The matter has progressed to the point where it looks like we will be having a final vote between that and the "Stack of books". Could you please indicate on your Wikisource user page that you are in part the designer of that proposed logo, and that you are willing to transfer all your rights if any under copyright and trademark law to the Wikimedia Foundation if it is finally chosen. Eclecticology 21:07, 2005 Feb 21 (UTC)
- I note that you have not yet responded to the above request. Although the original Sourceberg design was produced before you became involved your variation is sufficiently different to possibly carry additional rights. As long as the question of these rights remains unresolved your version cannot be accepted as the Wikisource logo. If you do not respond within a reasonable time this will be interpreted as an indication that you do not intend to transfer those rights, and that you have withdrawn your proposals. Please stop reverts ... Let's talk
I am doing stub cleaning and consolidation that is needed to reduce the incidence of tiny articles. For instance, did you know that the Luis Rodriguez article was linked to by a music producer, two boxers and a singer? Courtland 17:19, 2005 Mar 13 (UTC)
Let's talk about this .. I think we are trying to do the same thing and I'm desirous of keeping all information you've spent a lot of time putting in. Courtland 17:25, 2005 Mar 13 (UTC)
Changing a copy in cover
Thank you for your reply, Zanimum. I feel your proposal makes a sence ; "Meetups in Asia, Europe and North America" It is a good summarie of many meetups in this fall! --Aphaea* 15:14, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Quarto cover in Spanish
Sorry to border you, but there are two details to change in the Spanish version of the cover. I'm sorry about it because I've just notice the cover were ready today.
- Capítulos locales creados should be changed to Asociaciones locales creadas (After discussion with other translator we changed the translation of the word chapter and I forgot to inform you).
- France alberga caches squid para Wikimedia should be changed to Francia alberga caches squid para Wikimedia (Also my fault).
Thanks in advance. --Ascánder 22:49, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

This article you seem to have created (way back when) is listed on VFD, and current consensus is that it's a load of complete nonsense ;) Thought it might be a good idea to ask if you've any more info about the subject, or if current consensus is correct? sjorford →•← 22:45, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Quartizatin: covers, pdfs, etc.
Heya, zan. You should meet a friend of mine in NY working on puppetry and children's TV... Anyhow, check out the new covers page. I auto-levelled your covers, which darkened the orange in general. Also fixed the Nl: cover. A few questions:
- Any luck with the new Czech version?
- I was really pleased with the way this one turned out; I also realized that the next cover should ideally be PD (for print/pdf distribution, I'd like the entire newsletter to be PD if possible, and am making that clear for future text submissions.). If you have thoughts about the next cover, please list them on m:WQ/Covers.
- Also, the top existing image on that page says "Quatro" instead of "Quarto" -- this is a common enough mistake that I'd like to replace the image, so as not to cofuse people...
- Thoughts on making PDFs of existing versions? What toolchain do you use for htlm-->pdf conversion? I've been playing with a separate layout in pagemaker, but I'd really rather do it in Quark. You mentioned at one point being interested in working on PDFs, and I assume you have experience with that. +sj + 01:05, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Oh wow, that's cool, do you know what show he works on?
- Fairly good renders, besides the slight variance in the shade of orange.
- I've got the Czech version corrected, and the Polish and Russian versions put together. I think next issue, the contents font should be swtiched to Myriad Pro; it's the only decent sans-serif that has all the many characters we need (except for Chinese and Japanese of course).
- The Russian cover currently has a sans serif typeface for Викимедиа Кварто/Wikimedia Quarto, unlike all the rest which are in the serifed font Sabon. I searched all my fonts, for some reason this is the only one that worked for Russian text.
- I've changed the Quatro image to the current English cover with Quarto on it.
- The cover "should ideally be PD": how so? I gave a Wikimedia Copyright tag to each of the current files, I thought that would be correct. Do you wish for me to relicense them under GNU or outright PD? I'm fine with any license. The image of the London city hall itself is GNU licensed.
- Html to PDF conversion? I don't convert web to Acrobat that often. I've been working in Illustrator all the way through this, but I generally would do it all in Quark or Adobe InDesign. You're talking about an actual print-style version of WQ, right? -- user:zanimum
