Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School, established in 1887, is one of the oldest schools in Bangladesh. It is located in Patuakhali District. It is a boy's school.

History

Origins

The school started its journey in a house made of golpata (a type of palm leaf) on the private land of Akshay Kumar De, the then-owner of the current Sonali Bank building in Puran Bazar (near the current district post office). Initially, the school was named “Patuakhali Entrance School” under the headmastership of the honorary magistrate Ras Ranjan Pal. The current hostel and the eastern playground of the school were once agricultural land. In 1884, the then S.D.O. Faiz Uddin Hossain leased the land from the owner and constructed a one-story building with eight rooms using government grants and locally collected donations. In 1887, on the occasion of the “Golden Jubilee” (50th anniversary) of Queen Victoria’s reign, the school was moved from the old golpata house to the newly constructed building and was renamed “Patuakhali Jubilee High English School” as a commemorative gesture. In 1912, the then government acquired 15 bighas of land adjacent to the school for the purpose of nationalization and handed it over to the education department. The executive committee refused to hand over the school to government management. Instead, the land was permanently leased in the school’s name for an annual rent of one taka, and the building was expanded. The school’s reputation quickly spread, and in 1917, it received permanent approval from Calcutta University. At that time, the headmaster was Bardakanta Sen. In 1961, the school received approval from the Dhaka Board to introduce a science department.

Nationalization

In the 1962-63 academic year, the school was brought under the “Multi-Lateral Scheme” and underwent multifaceted development. On November 15, 1968, the school was nationalized and renamed “Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School.”

Present day

In January 2013, the school observed its 125th anniversary. Former alumni have held important positions in Bangladesh, including Minister Shahjahan Mia, Justice Mohammed Nizamul Huq and Additional Deputy Attorney General MK Rahman.
