The station takes it name from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It owns 11 transmitters that broadcast across the entire state, as well as into parts of Virginia and South Carolina, and four digital channels: UNC-KD (children’s programs), UNC-HD (high-definition programming), UNC-NC (North Carolina public affairs and original local productions), and UNC-ED (educational television). The network's first airing was on January 8, 1955, on WUNC-TV.
