The 2007 San Diego Chargers season will begin with the team trying to improve on their 14-2 record in 2006, and attempt to return to the playoffs again. They are the early co-favorites to win Super Bowl XLII, along with the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots. The current roster features returning league M.V.P. Offseason
The off season began in turmoil. After a postseason letdown, offensive and defensive head coordinators Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips respectively left for new coaching jobs with the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys respectively. Marty Schottenheimer, after originally being told he would stay as head coach, was fired in February. To the dismay of some fans, Norv Turner, whose past career as a head coach has been marked with mediocrity, was signed to take over the helm later in the month. Turner who installed the Chargers current offensive set when he was the teams OC in 2001 , was selected to be the head coach largely due to the fact that he would maintain the offensive game plan that lead the team to its best regular season record in team history. Turner also agreed with GM A.J. Smith on the hiring of defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell who had worked with Wade Phillips in Buffalo and later was the DC with the Bills. This was important to Smith as he felt the need to keep the type of defense (1 gap 3-4) in place that had been very successful during Phillips time in San Diego. GM Smith also resigned Charger free agent offensive Guard Kris Dielman to a six-year contract that will virtually guarantee him almost $17 million and put him around $40 million over the life of the deal.ILB Donnie Edwards was not offered a contract and signed with his former team the K.C. Chiefs. Dielman was Co-lineman of the Year in 2006 for the Chargers.
2007 NFL Draft
Main article: 2007 NFL DraftThe Chargers started out by making the 30nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft due to their 14-2 season. They selected Craig Davis out of LSU. The selection of Davis should fill the teams need for a wr after veteran Keenan McCardell was released following the 2006 campaign. In the second round DB Eric Weddle is the selection as the Chargers search for improved safety play. Weddle selection follows the off-season release of Terrance Kiel who missed some playing time following his arrest in 2006 on drug distribution charges. ILB Donnie Edwards was not offered a contract by the Chargers so the Chargers selected Anthony Waters ILB Clemson, who missed his senior season due to a leg injury. The 2007 NFL Draft was held on April 28 and 29, 2007 in New York City, New York.
