Governor Cooney was born December 31, 1872 in Canada.
He replaced Governor John Edward Erickson, who left office to become U.S. Senator in 1933. Governor Cooney died in office in 1935 reportedly from heart failure. He is credited for reforming the state liquor laws and establishing a water conservation program.
