"To Tell the Tooth" |
---|
To Tell the Tooth is the 25th episode of Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Pee-wee has a doozy of a toothache, but refuses to go to the dentist! But when he finally does, he finds out that it was worth it and he's glad!
Plot
Brushing Your Teeth
Pee-wee places some clothes on his bed and then goes out to wish everyone a good morning. He asks if they had a good night sleep last night and if they all brushed their teeth this morning. They give him affirmitive answers to both questions in unison.
Pee-wee then sits down on the circular purple couch. Then Randy floats down and Pee-wee promptly accuses him of not brushing his teeth that morning, as he can feel his "morning breath". Randy protests that he brushed them last night, but Pee-wee says that he's supposed to brush his teeth in the morning, too, or his breath will have a disgusting and horrendous morning breath smell. He adds that brushing your teeth isn't just for breath, it's also to promote healthy teeth and gums. He then asks Randy to do himself and everyone a favor and go brush his teeth. Randy asks if he can find out what the secret word is first. Pee-wee says no, because if Randy screamed with that morning breath of his, he would clear out the whole playhouse. Pee-wee then asks him again to go brush; they would wait for him. So Randy leaves. He then returns shortly thereafter. Pee-wee says that that's much better and adds that if Randy is good to his teeth, his teeth will be good to him. He then flashes a shiny smile at the camera.
Pee-wee then decides to find out the day's secret word. He unplugs Conky from the wall and flips the switch on him, bringing him to life. Conky says that he's ready to assist Pee-wee. Pee-wee says good morning. Then Randy explains that Conky didn't brush his teeth this morning. Pee-wee says he doesn't have to; he doesn't have any teeth to brush. "Gummy!" Pee-wee quips. He asks his robot what the secret word is today. A piece of cardstock pops out of Conky's midsection. Pee-wee removes the card stock and displays it to the audience. The secret word is: IT. Pee-wee asks the audience what it is they do whenever they hear the secret word. Everyone says, "Scream!" Pee-wee says that that's right and that whenever anyone says the secret word for the rest of the day, they should scream real loud. He tries it out on Randy: "Hey, Randy, still wanna know what today's secret word is?" "Yeah, what is it?" Randy asks. Everyone, of course, screams. Randy says, "Aw, you got me!" He then goes to try it out on Pterri. He rises.
Randy lands on Pterri's nest and they greet each other. Randy and Pterri then argue with each about saying the secret word. It turns out that Randy is trying to get Pterri to say the secret word. So Randy says, "Aw c'mon, just say it!" Everyone screams. Pterri triumphantly says, "I made you say the secret word! I made you say the secret word!" "Aw, nuts," Randy groans. Randy leaves while Pterri keeps laughing.
Jambi's Vacation
Then the Puppetland Band performs an interpretive-type number with mellow music and each of the three beatniks take turns belting out a stanza. Dirty Dog goes first:
- Hey everybody
- Gather 'round
- To hear a truly groovy
- Funky sound.
- Too hip
- I don't mean maybe
- Just check out... Chicky Baby.
It then moves on to Chicky Baby:
- They call me chicky
- 'Cause I'm a chick
- The chickiest chickedy
- Lickety-split
- A-be-bop, a-boo-bah
- I love to chitty-chat
- Just ask my main man, Cool Cat.
Now it goes to Cool Cat:
- I am a cat, I am a cat
- I am a cat, precisely that
- Kitty cat, pitter pat
- Fee-fi-fo-fum
- This groovy groove
- Is done.
Now all three band members join in scatting in unison for a minute longer. Pee-wee, who has evidently been listening, thanks them and says that that was really... interpretive. He says this in a rather perplexed way. Then he hears the Picturephone ringing. He yells that he will go get "it". Everyone screams.
He enters the phone booth and answers the phone. It's Jambi the genie. He is evidently on vacation, because Pee-wee asks him how it's going. "Great!" Jambi says. "I wish you were here." "Wish? Did somebody say 'wish'?" Pee-wee asks. "Hey, that's my line!" Jambi says with a laugh. Pee-wee says he's just wishing if he's having a good time. Jambi is at Mount Rushmore (actually, he's on the mountain, replacing the Lincoln head!).
The Geography Game
Globey then calls Pee-wee, asking if he would like to play a game with him. Pee-wee comes over and Globey calls his game, "The Geography Game", in which Globey names a locale and Pee-wee has to say where in the continental United States it's located. Pee-wee agrees to play. Globey then asks a question: "Where can you find Niagara Falls?" Globey then spins for a few seconds while Pee-wee thinks about his answer. He finally guesses Asia, but Globey says no; Niagara Falls is located in New York.
Globey then explains all about Niagara Falls: "Niagara Falls is one of the world's most beautiful natural phenomenons. The falls are seven miles long and border the United States and Canada. Five hundred thousands tons of water plunge over the falls each minute. And in the winter, they're transformed into a picturesque icy wonderland." Globey tells Pee-wee that's how he plays The Geography Game. "Hmm, geography-y!" Pee-wee muses. He then has a question for Globey: "Where can one find lots of good things to eat?" Globey says, "I give up, where?" "In the refrigerator!" Pee-wee shouts with delight.
Lots of Good Things To Eat
Pee-wee then hurries over to the refrigerator at the other end of the playhouse. He opens the door to see all the food attending a wedding, in which a slice of bread with peanut butter on it is getting married to a slice of bread with jelly on it. Pee-wee watches as the two slices kiss and then picks up a carrot to eat. He says he loves his carrot, but he's not going to marry it. Everyone screams. He then says that carrots are naturally good, and good for you, because they're full of vitamins A, B and C. Plus, he says, they're good for your eyesight, too. He asks the audience if they've ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses. He then proceeds to chomp on the carrot. "Mmm, rabbity!" he laughs. He then takes another bite and then receives a pain in his mouth. His tooth is hurting. "Ow! My tooth!" he cries. "My tooth hurts!"
Rocketship Flight
Later, Pee-wee is heard calling the audience to him, but he's nowhere in the playhouse to be seen. Then the viewers discover him inside Magic Screen. He is about to engage in another session of Connect-the-Dots. He digs into his pockets and tosses out his dots. They form a rocketship. The background changes to a rocket launching pad. Pee-wee jumps into the cockpit. A loudspeaker does a ten-second countdown to liftoff, while Pee-wee buckles in his seat belt. When the countdown reaches zero, the loudspeaker signals for liftoff. The rocket then starts to climb into the stratosphere. In no time, the rocket reaches into space. "G-Force!" Pee-wee says. In the void of space, he passes by a meteor shower (a bathroom shower spewing stars), the planet Venus (in the guise of a Venus de Milo statue), the planet Uranus (which Pee-wee almost lands on), the man in the moon and a streak of comets. Then the rocketship's cockpit opens and Pee-wee floats out into space, weightless. He floats about in space, commenting that he's Major Tom, and then floats back down to the playhouse.
Toothache
Pee-wee lands on Chairry, as always. But the rough landing has jarred him and hurt his tooth. He yells, "Ow! Ow!" and clutches at his cheek in pain. Chairry asks him if he's all right. "No, Chairry, I'm not all right!" Pee-wee shouts. "If was all right, would I be moaning, 'Ow', 'ow'? My tooth hurts!"
Randy descends with a long pointed dentist tool. He offers to find out where Pee-wee's sore tooth is. He asks Pee-wee to open his mouth. Randy then places the tool in Pee-wee's mouth. He points it against several of Pee-wee's teeth until it finds it. "Ow!" Pee-wee shouts. "That's it!" Everyone screams at the secret word. Globey then asks if his achy tooth is more susceptible to hot or cold. Pee-wee says he's not sure. So Conky brings him a tray with two cups, one full of hot water and the other filled with cold water. First, he drinks the hot water. He immediately gets the painful feeling. Now he tries the cold water. That seems to not hurt him until a few seconds later. Globey decides that Pee-wee should go see a dentist. But Pee-wee tries to cover it up by saying that his tooth suddenly feels just fine; he never felt better. He tries to ignore the agonizing pain in his tooth, but it soon becomes too much to bear. "I just need something to take my line off my teeth," he mutters. Clocky offers something to make him feel better: a Penny cartoon.
After the Penny cartoon, Pee-wee is seen rolling around on the kitchen floor, yelling out in pain. "Moo-hoo!" comes the voice of the Cowntess. She has brought with her Pee-wee's favorite dish: corn-on-the-cob. Pee-wee, having apparently forgotten about his pain, picks one of the cobs up and and says that it (yet no one screams because "it" was not the last word in his sentence) looks really delicious. "Well, what're you waiting for?" the Cowntess says. "Bite it." Everyone screams at the secret word.
Then Pee-wee takes a big bite into the cob. Then the pain comes back to him, worse than ever. He keeps yelling out in pain. He then heads over to Jambi's box, calling for help and having evidently forgotten that Jambi is on vacation. He bangs on the top of the box, calling for Jambi. The doors open and Pee-wee is greeted with an answering machine and Jambi's voice speaks out of it: "Hi. I'm not here to grant your wish right now, so leave you name and wish after the beep and I'll be back to grant it just as soon as I can." Then the answering machine beeps and the doors close. Pee-wee groans.
Randy's Tooth-Removal Plan
Later, a long string is seen snaked through the playhouse, tied to both Pee-wee's sore tooth and the open playhouse door. This is Randy's plan to remove the sore tooth from Pee-wee for him. "Are you sure you know what you're doing, Randy?" Pee-wee asks, standing near his bed. "Trust me," says Randy. He explains what he is doing: he tied the string around Pee-wee's sore tooth. This string goes down the stairs to his room, over the rocket ship that some characters ride in, around the purple island couch and back up to the playhouse door. Randy plans to slam the door, because then the tooth will come out. Magic Screen says to Pee-wee that that's a crazy idea and then says that Pee-wee would be better off calling the dentist. Pee-wee says, "Maybe Magic Screen is right, Randy. Let's forget it." Everyone screams.
Miss Yvonne then enters the playhouse, calling for Pee-wee. She notices the door open and closes it. "No!" Pee-wee screams. But it's too late. The door is closed. Now Pee-wee is sent careening through the playhouse, being dragged by the string, down the stairs, over the rocket, around the couch, until finally he crashes into the door. Miss Yvonne notices this and apologizes because she never knew he was tied to the door. Pee-wee removes the string and says his tooth hurts. Yvonne tells him she's not surprised. She adds that that's no way to treat a toothache. She asks him who talked him into this crazy idea. "See ya later, dudes!" Randy says hastily and rises. Miss Yvonne is about to ask Pee-wee to ask him why he hasn't gone to see the dentist and Pee-wee is about to explain when Conky and Globey come up close to Pee-wee and Yvonne. So Pee-wee decides to go over to the couch to be more private. So they go over there and sit down, apparently holding hands.
Confession
Pee-wee asks Miss Yvonne if she promises not to laugh at him if he tells her something. Yvonne says, "Of course I won't." "You won't promise?" Pee-wee asks. "No, I won't laugh," Yvonne says. Pee-wee then explains that he's afraid to go the dentist. Yvonne says that that's understandable, but adds that it's important to go the dentist. She adds that if he is good to his teeth, his teeth will be good to him. She flashes a smile at him. "Deja vu," Pee-wee mutters. Then she adds that there's no reason to be afraid of his dentist; she loves her dentist. Pee-wee says she loves everyone. She says she especially loves her dentist, because he takes care of her teeth, keeping them clean, beautiful and healthy. Pee-wee asks if that hurts. She says no and adds that she has a very low pain threshold.
The Dentist
Miss Yvonne then asks Magic Screen to show Pee-wee what happens at the dentist. So Magic Screen does so. A film is shown on dental hygiene, hosted by an animated tooth named Molar. Checkups, the film says, are necessary to avoid tooth decay. The dentist examines teeth to make sure his patients don't have cavities and show the right way to ensure a healthy smile. It adds to rinse and spit.
Pee-wee says he likes the part about rinsing and spitting the best, but not the drill. "Well, that's one of the tools the dentist uses to keep your teeth happy." "See, Pee-wee?" Conky says. "There's nothing to be afraid of." "That's easy for you to say, Conky," says Pee-wee. "You don't have any teeth!" Some of the other playhouse denizens all tell him they go to the dentist and explain the advantages of being at the dentist's: he would be able to ride up and down in the dentist's chair, he'll wear a bib and get his teeth's pictures taken.
Miss Yvonne asks Pee-wee what he says. He asks her if she will go with him. She says yes, then says maybe there will be time for her to get a checkup, too. "Alright, I'll do it!" Pee-wee says bravely. Everyone screams. Then the flowers all signal for the King of Cartoons' arrival. He enters the playhouse as Pee-wee and Yvonne leave, saying good-bye to him as they go. "Hello? Good-bye?" the king asks, perplexed. He shrugs and promptly shows a cartoon.
Tooth Removed
When the cartoon ends, Mr. Kite says that Pee-wee is returning. "Oh no, poor Pee-wee!" Mr. Window says. Two men appear in the playhouse, pushing a gurney with Pee-wee stretched out on it. "Ow!" Pee-wee groans. "Oh, my goodness!" Pterri exclaims. Chairry asks Pee-wee if he's all right.
Pee-wee groans one last time, then leaps up from the gurney, ecstatic. "Boy, am I glad I went to the dentist!" he says with glee. He explains that there was nothing to be afraid of after all. He says that the dentist was really nice and his tooth doesn't hurt. He shows the denizens a tooth in his hands. He explains that the dentist said that his sore just had to come out to make room for another.
With that, he heads over to his scooter's place. He turns the crank on the statue arm and the hidden door rises, releasing his red scooter. He mounts the scooter and puts on the helmet. He says good-bye to the denizens of the playhouse and they all take turns saying good-bye back to him. He then says to the viewers: "You know something? If there ever was the coolest place in the world, this is IT!" Everyone screams again one last time. Pee-wee then 'scoots' out, and the supposedly locked door swings open, and he flies out of the playhouse, passing Mount Rushmore on his way, as always (Jambi is still there). The end credits roll.
Trivia
