This highway has been referred to as "Old I-96" by the Michigan Department of Transportation, as reported on the Michigan Highways website. Its eastern terminus is at the M-5/Grand River Avenue junction southeast of Farmington and it's western terminus is at the junction of M-5 and Grand River Avenue west of the city.
History
As I-96 was rerouted via Livonia along the Jeffries Freeway in 1977, what had been posted as I-96 east of the I-696 junction was redesignated as M-102, which is now part of M-5. Simultaneously, the Business Loop I-96 designation through downtown Farmington was removed and Grand River Avenue became an unsigned state trunkline, a status it has retained to this day.
