Since both nations achieved independence in August 1947, there have been three major wars between India and Pakistan:

In addition, the 1999 Kargil Conflict is regarded by some as a fourth war between the two states. Besides these, there is an undeclared war which has been waged by Pakistan for the past 15 years or so against India. This is the proxy war, which is being fought by Pakistan through terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Thousands of innocents have lost their lives in this war, and continue to do so everyday.
