Upleta is a city and a municipality in Rajkot district in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Geography

Upleta is located at 21°44′N 70°17′E / 21.73°N 70.28°E / 21.73; 70.28. It has an average elevation of 39 metres (127 feet).

Upleta is a town located about 19 km from Dhoraji, in the Rajkot District of Gujarat, on the banks of the Moj River. With its high fort wall, huge bastions, gates and small ghats and the skyline of the buildings, Upleta has a picturesque composition. Some major points of attraction here are a mosque, a Jain temple, and a temple of Mojeshwar Mahadev. The Darbargadh, now a police station, is enclosed within a fortified campus. It has a high-quality drainage system, that helps to prevent flooding during monsoon season. The city is also well-known for its high-quality road system.

In the middle of the city there is a ststue of Maharaja Bhagvadsinghji. This area is called Bapu Na Bavla(statue) chowk.

Demographics

As of 2006 India census, Upleta had a population of 56,354. The population is mainly a mixture of Hindu and Muslim. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Upleta has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 65%. In Upleta, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

It was formerly ruled by Gondal Maharaja before independence. Along with Gondal, Dhoraji it was one of the major towns of Gondal state.

It was famous for its water-supply tank in old Darbargadh which was unique during those old times.

Major crops are groundnuts and cotton.

Transportation

Rail: Upleta Railway Station is on the Porbandar-Bhavnagar railway line. It is under the administrative control of the Western Railways. The station is located about 19 km from Dhoraji. To the west is Wansjaliya Railway Station, the nearest main station. Going east, Jetalsar Junction Railway Station is the nearest main station.

Airport: Nearest airport: Rajkot Airport.

Bus: Upleta Bus Station is located in Rajkot District, Gujarat. Upleta is on National Highway 8B. The station connects Upleta with Rajkot, Jamjodhpur, Gondal and Jetpur.
