Tasks

Making sure existing pronunciations are in use

Browse through some of the following places to look for recordings that we might be able to use on the English Misplaced Pages if we're not already. If you find one of use, add it to the article along with its IPA transcription using {{Audio-IPA}}. This is a great way to contribute if you're not able to do recordings.

Contributing pronunciations

  1. Find an article to contribute a pronunciation to. Some places to look:
  2. If you find an article that needs a pronunciation but you don't feel qualified to add one, add it to Category:Requests for audio pronunciation (or better, one of its language-specific subcategories).
  3. If there is not already an IPA transcription, add one using the templates at Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style (pronunciation)#Related_templates. See Help:Pronunciation and Help:IPA for help using IPA. If you're not sure how to pronounce the term, or can't read IPA, try Merriam-Webster or howjsay.com for an example (but of course do not copy IPA or sound files directly from these copyrighted websites).
  4. Check for an entry on the term in the English Wiktionary and its native language Wiktionary, if applicable, to see if it already has an audio pronunciation. If so, just use that (unless you wish to improve upon it).
  5. Record a pronunciation in OGG format. Much of the advice at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Spoken Misplaced Pages/Recording guidelines applies here, except that unlike a spoken article, a pronunciation recording should contain only the pronunciation of the word, and no English description or explanation. This allows it to be reused across projects. See also wikt:Help:Audio pronunciations.
  6. Upload the pronunciation to Wikimedia Commons (see Commons:Upload; you will have to create an account at Commons). By convention, the filename should have the format "language code-dialect code-term.ogg", for example "En-us-Euphrates.ogg". In the description, include the term being pronounced, its IPA transcription, and a description of your speech dialect. Add the appropriate subcategory of Commons:Category:Pronunciation based on the language of the pronunciation (e.g. ]).
  7. Use the {{Audio-IPA}} or {{Audio-IPA-nohelp}} template to attach the recording to the IPA transcription. This will automatically add it to the category Category:Articles including recorded pronunciations.
  8. Check other projects to see if they can also use the recording:
    • Check the English Wiktionary to see if it has a listing for the term; if so, add the IPA transcription and audio recording there as well using the {{IPA}} and {{audio}} templates as described at wikt:Wiktionary:Pronunciation#Section_layout_and_templates.
    • Check the interwiki links on the Misplaced Pages and Wiktionary entry, particularly those corresponding to the "native" language of a foreign term. If you don't know the templates to use on a particular non-English wiki, just use the following markup:
      ]
  9. If you have added pronunciations for all necessary terms in an article, remove it from Category:Requests for audio pronunciation.
