At about 9:00 local time, a plane crashed into the northern tower of the World Trade Center. About 18 minutes later, another plane (something like a 737) crashed into the southern tower of the building. About 10:00, one of the towers collapsed.

There have been reports that the planes were hijacked from American Airlines, starting from Boston.

As a side effect, just about every news site on the Internet slowed down to unusability as everyone tried to find more information about the plane crashes.
