Fetal pain is a significant question in the debate over abortion. Some claim that the fetus can feel pain by the second month after conception when the neuro-anatomic structures have developed. A recent review of evidence in the Journal of the American Medical Association, however, concludes that it is unlikely that a fetus can feel pain before the third trimester.
