Ubud, Jalan Raya, Pothole, 2009

Jalan Raya, Ubud, July 2009

that was a sidewalk; watch your step ;)

Jalan Raya (main road) of Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. In early July, 2009, a pothole appeared in front of the market (pasar). Then the road began to subside and some barriers went up. The sound of running water was heard from rather far below the hole.

The market is (was) often visited by large Mercedes Benz buses bringing mostly Taiwanese tourists on day-trips to Ubud. They're *heavy* and often "break roads". Some time ago (40+ years), there was a bridge here over a river and a culvert was constructed out of stone and mortar and a lot of dirt thrown on top. This was decades before electricity or pavement made it to town. The culvert has disintegrated and the river has eroded away everything under the road.

After a few days of watching the hole expand and scrambling to rearrange the directionality of streets, an excavator was brought in to see what's down there; down about 10 metres. The river, and some stones.

No one knows what's going to happen. Some senior people from the provincial government came for a look-see a week later. The culvert is hundreds of metres long and runs under the main parking lot of the market and a number of large buildings (all owned by the palace;). My guess is at least a year to sort the mess with the buildings coming down and the market relocated out of town.
