T N Krishnan (b. October 6, 1928) whose full name is Trippunitura Narayanan Krishnan is a Carnatic music violinist.
Personal life and background
T N Krishnan was born in Chennai to A. Narayana Iyer and Ammini Ammal, both Carnatic musicians.
He learnt music under Allepey Parthasarathy Iyengar and later Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. He was a Professor of Music at a music college in Chennai and later he was Dean of the School of Music and Fine Arts at the University of Delhi.
TN Krishnan is married and has two children Viji Krishnan Natarajan, and Sriram Krishnan.
Career
TN Krishnan, a child prodigy, made his debut concert at the age of eight. At younger age he accompanied the legends like Ariyakkudi, Musiri, Alathur brothers, Chembai and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer.
His performance gives the importance he gave to expressional restraint. He scans the ragas with an eye on beauteous light and shade. In the present generation of musicians, he is one of the few instrumentalists who can provide this experience to listeners and create in their minds nostalgic memories of a bygone era.
He travels extensively on musical tours all over the world.
Awards and titles
He won the National Award from the Sangeet Natak Academy in 1974. Later he was awarded Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1980. He was awarded both the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri by the Government of India.
