The University of Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd (PMU) is the first private university in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This medium-sized university is located in Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia with an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. The campus is separated between the Men's and Women's campuses. The Men's campus houses all of the administration. However, women are allowed to attend meetings in the Administration Building. The Learning Resources Center also contains several conference rooms where male and female faculty, staff and administrators can meet.
PMU prides itself of being hi-tech and a leader in applying leading edge technology to education, but there are continual problems with the technology and the physical plant. For instance, each class is provided with SMART Board, but they often do not work on the Women's campus.
PMU is unique in Saudi Arabia in several aspects: PMU is an English-based (though many classes are taught in Arabic by non-western faculty), Western-style, in theory, but strictly segregated and currently not accredited by any international body, student-centered university open to both men and women (on separate campuses), and to Saudi and non-Saudi citizens. (It should be noted that PMU is not currently eligible for international accreditation due to the fact that it is only in the fourth year of academics. Most accreditation bodies require at least one graduation class before a university can apply for accreditation.)
PMU's partners include industry and higher education institutions interested in actively participating in the development and implementation of programs that respond to the needs of the local, regional and global communities. Current partners of PMU include: American University, BIBLIOTHECA ALEXANDRINA, IBM, Curtin University of Technology – Western Australia, Ernst & Young Consulting, Halliburton Energy Services, International Association of Science Parks, Oracle, Royal National College for the Blind (RNCB), SAS – USA/Middle East, SAUDEC, STC-Group (Rotterdam), Sun Microsystems, Texas A&M University-USA, The Maastricht School of Management - The Netherlands, University of Central Florida, University of Leeds, University of Groningen, University of Twente.
