The term tailgate in American English almost exclusively refers to the board or gate at the back of a pickup truck that is hinged at the bottom (and not the top) and is opened down (and not up). Hatch, hatchback and liftgate, among others, are terms used in American English to refer to a "door" at the back of a vehicle hinged at the top and opens to the top. 141.113.85.2110:06, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
