The capacity of the arena is up to 7,500 people. It is named after Dutch electronics conglomerate Philips.
It was home of the RheinEnergie Köln, for Euroleague games, for the 2006/2007 season.
The arena has hosted concerts by many famous artists, including Bob Marley & The Wailers, David Bowie, Cher, Phil Collins, The Cross, Celine Dion, Bob Dylan, KISS, Alison Krauss, Kraftwerk, Muse, New Kids on the Block, Noisettes, Robert Plant, The Police, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, T-Bone Burnett, Tangerine Dream, Van Halen and Robbie Williams, among others.
David Bowie was scheduled to perform during his Isolar II Tour on May 16, 1978, but the show was cancelled.
