Simon Strelchik was the federal New Democratic Party candidate for the Canadian riding of Thornhill, Ontario, in the 2006 general election. He improved the vote total for the NDP by 25%, earning 4405 votes. In the 2004 federal election, Rick Morelli ran for the NDP.
Simon is a community leader and a resident of Thornhill for 19 years. He is a founding member and Director of Free the Children, now the largest youth-led organization in the world, with over one million participants in 45 countries. Free the Children has shipped 200,000 health and education kits to needy children, and built more than 400 schools that over 35,000 students study at every day. It has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Simon Strelchik is also the past Chair of the York Region Health Services Youth Advisory Board, and past Member of Vaughan Council's Youth Advisory Committee. He was an Organizer of the "Truth About Youth" conference and the "Smoke This..." conference, and the Executive Director of Youth Fighting Tobacco. Simon was the chief organizer of the 30 Hour Famine at his local school for three years, which raised money for impoverished children. He was an original member of the York Region No-smoking Bylaw Task Force, which crafted the law governing tobacco in Thornhill and surrounding communities. Simon was also Vice-Chair of its Education Sub-committee.
Awarded the teachers' OSSTF award for outstanding involvement both in the community and in the school at his Graduation, Simon is involved in his community. He sought public office in 2000 and 2005 to represent Thornhill as a Ward 4 Board Trustee on the York Region District School Board.
Simon regularly attends the proceedings of the Parliament of Ontario, and has done so since 1996. He is the president of the Thornhill NDP since 2001, and past campaign manager. He volunteers regularly as an assistant for developmentally disabled children in York Region.
Simon Strelchik ran against Susan Kadis, the Liberal incumbent and Anthony Reale, the Conservative candidate.
