Bob's Burgers is an American animated television sitcom created by Loren Bouchard for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show, focuses on the Belcher family, who run a hamburger restaurant. On April 7, 2011, Bob's Burgers was renewed for a second season.

Plot

The show centers on the Belcher family who run a hamburger restaurant. Loren Bouchard stated Bob's Burgers came about, because Fox's animation brand centers mostly on family, but that he also wanted to dabble in workplace comedy. The show is said to fill the void created by the cancellation of King of the Hill, which Bob's Burgers executive producer Jim Dauterive worked on for nearly its entire run.

  • Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin), the husband of Linda and the father of Tina, Gene and Louise. He enjoys owning his own burger joint. Despite his unrequitted love for his restaurant, he unfortunately barely scrapes by due to poor business decisions (such as putting up specials in chalk, and his restaurant happens to be in a poor location (next door to a funeral home)) and the awkwardness of his wife and children. He has an ongoing rivalry with Hugo, an obnoxious health inspector (who once dated his wife, Linda in the past), and Jimmy Pesto, the snotty owner of a pizza parlor across the street.
  • Linda Belcher (John Roberts), Bob's wife and the mother of Tina, Gene and Louise. Despite being the wife of the household, Linda is very immature and some of her antics turn off potential customers, as well as her husband. In addition, though she supports her husband and his business, she wishes that he was more involved in her life, as it is implied that the two are quite distant at times when she wants to get intimate.
  • Tina Belcher (Dan Mintz), the eldest Belcher child. She is socially awkward and has a peculiar interest in horses and zombies. In addition, she has a crush on Jimmy Pesto, the son of Bob's rival business partner.
  • Gene Belcher (Eugene Mirman), the only son and middle child of the family. He is very enthusiastic and likes to play with his keyboard. His immaturity and awkwardness to potential customers play into the problems that his father has to put up with when dealing with his restaurant.
  • Louise Belcher (Kristen Schaal), the youngest Belcher. She enjoys pulling pranks on people she feels are stupid, and is quite mature for her age. She also tends to boss around her older siblings and peer pressures her peers into getting her way. She is apparently closer to her father than she is to her mother.

Critical

The series has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Metacritic.com gave an aggregate score of 53 or "mixed or average reviews." Entertainment Weekly gave the show an A- grade in its review, remarking that "a comedy this well done is very rare indeed." Ain't It Cool News called Bob's Burgers "perhaps the funniest half-hour currently airing on broadcast TV." In its review, CNN called the show "wickedly funny" and said there are "too many highlights to list here."

However, the Washington Post described the show as "pointlessly vulgar and derivatively dull" while Reuters stated that "It's unwise -- and unnecessary -- to launch an animated sitcom on Fox that appears intent to ape the vulgarity quotient of Family Guy." USA Today stated that "Bob's Burgers isn't very tasty" describing the comedy as just "lop along, stumbling from one tasteless moment to the next" The New York Times described the show as having "a lackadaisical vibe; its humor, no matter how anarchic, slides by in a deadpan monotone."

Ratings

After airing, the show became the highest-rated series premiere of the season and also finished 9th in the ratings for the week it aired. Despite this, the ratings went on a slide with Bill Gorman of TV by the Numbers calling it a "toss up" for renewal before the series was renewed for a second season.
