The Lions Gate produced independent film devoted to the life of a marijuana-smoking, gun-toting African American grandmother continues to be a huge financial success, despite playing in almost one-third less theaters than competing films from the Big Six. The reasoning, according to Steve Rothenberg, Lions Gate president of domestic distribution, is due to its unique market appeal, "I believe that we're in all the right theaters...I'm not sure there's much room for expansion." To illustrate the point, Lions Gate exit polls showed 52% of the audience were black women over the age of 35. The film grossed $30 million in its opening weekend - good enough for first place. It garnered a staggering $13,787 per theater, a number that nearly matched the initial release weekend average of Hollywood's most recent blockbuster previous to this film, King Kong (2005).
