The group was started around 1970 by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, and Annifrid Lyngstad and the name ABBA incorporates their first initials. They became widely known when they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. ABBA split up in 1982.

Other important people around ABBA were Stikkan Anderson (producer), Michael B. Tretow (sound technician), and Anders Eljas (arrangements).
ABBA has experienced a resurgence of sorts in recent years. The sound track of the successful Australian film Muriel's Wedding (1994) consisted entirely of ABBA songs. A new Swedish band, the A-Teens, consider themselves a rebirth of the original band. And a Broadway musical, Mamma Mia, whose music is also all ABBA songs, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical.
In 2000, ABBA was reported to have turned down an offer of approximately one billion dollars to do a reunion tour. Wits postulated that perhaps they were offered more money to NOT do a reunion tour.
