Scotlandshire is a term sometimes used to denote either the anglicization of Scotland or Scotland's perceived subordinate political relationship with England. By placing the word shire after the nation's name, there is a parody of the early modern tendency to place the word -shire after many ancient Scottish regions, as well as a tongue-and-cheek implication that Scotland has the status of an English county, rather than that of a distinct nation.
