St Machan was a saint who travelled around the area of Campsie (near Glasgow) telling people about christianity during the Dark Ages. After travels to Italy and Ireland, at the foot of the Glen in Campsie he erected a small chapel used an adjacent well for baptisms. When he died, he was buried at the site and a parish church was put over his grave in 1175.
