The Near East University (NEU; Template:Lang-tr, commonly referred to as YDÜ) is a private university located in North Cyprus. It was founded in North Nicosia in 1988 by Suat İ. Günsel. It is the sister university of the University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi), established in 2013. The Near East University has one of the largest endowments standing 1.1 billion as of 2013.
The Near East University currently has 16 faculties with 90 departments, 4 vocational schools, 2 high schools, and 4 graduate schools offering programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Near East University also comprises 15 research centres conducting research in fundamental areas and advanced technologies. The language of instruction is English in most departments.
Currently, there are over 20 thousand students from 67 countries doing undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Near East University. The Near East University has one of the largest campus areas in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The main campus (980 ha) of NEU is located in Nicosia. The university is also currently carrying out development projects in suburbs of Nicosia.
The main campus has one of the largest libraries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, involving more than one million printed materials and over more than 150 million electronic sources accessible from all over the world. The Research and Training Hospital is also located on the campus of NEU. The main campus comprises several social and sports facilities with an Olympic swimming pool, where national and international sports competitions are held.
The Near East University is a full member of the European University Association, of the International Association of Universities (UNESCO), International Society for Engineering Education, Joint Commission International, and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World,and the Avicenna Group of World Health Organization.
History
The Near East University was founded by Günsel in 1988. It started higher education studies with two faculties and over time, established other faculties, graduate schools, and research centres, finally adding ay Faculty of Medicine in 2009, for a total of 16 faculties with 88 departments.
Research and Traning Hospital
The Near East University Training and Research Hospital has a 55,000 square-meter closed area with 209 private, single patient rooms, 8 operating theatres, 30-bed Intensive Care Unit, 17-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a laboratory where a wide array of tests can be carried out, and a diagnostic imaging center.
Campus
The university's pool is the only Olympic sized indoor swimming pool in the TRNC.
The campus of NEU is organized as a small city where all daily needs and demands of students and staff can be met at all levels. These are social, cultural and sports activities, fully equipped dormitories, culture and congress centres, museums, indoor swimming pool, health and wellness centres, hospital, student clubs, library, shops, guest house and residence, transportation facilities, car parks, natural park, canteens, restaurants and cafes, hotel, security services, Near East Radio and TV, banks, fuel station, post office, and laundry.
