Gangoobai is a movie produced by National Film Development Corporation of India and directed by Priya Krishnaswamy. The story is about an elderly maid servant who works hard to achieve her dream of an extremely expensive Gara sari and changes the lives of people she interacts with while in mumbai to buy the sari.

Plot

Gangoobai is an elderly widowed maid servant in a small town of Matheran working for an affluent family. She one day sees the daughter of the family wearing a Gara sari bought from a very posh store Ardra. The sari mesmerizes her she has a sleepless night that day. She counts all her saving and finding it short of the expected amount to buy a similar sari she works hard for the next four years to save enough for the sari. She makes the trip to mumbai to Ardra which at that time is having financial difficulties internally and in the process meets Daksha the manager for Ardra, Waman an accountant in Ardra, Roshini a model, the designer Rohan and Jamshyd Mistry a rich elderly person. Does she get her favorite sari and how her visit impacts their lives for ever with her interactions is the rest of the story.

Critical Response

The Times of India gave it 2.5 stars out of 5 and reviewer summarizes it as "Gangoobai doesn't sweep your heart away, but leaves you with some sweet, feel-good moments.". The mid-day gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and says that "At that very instance, this heartwarming film subtly teaches us something about our generation." . IMDB rating is pretty high at 8.4/10 but with a low number of votes of 94 votes.
