An editor has launched a copyright investigation involving this section. The text under investigation is currently hidden from public view, but is accessible in the page history. Please do not remove this notice or restore blanked content until the issue is resolved by an administrator, copyright clerk, or volunteer response agent.

The purported copyright violation copies text from https://itunes.apple.com/ca/movie/mac-and-devin-go-to-high-school/id617135138 (Copyvios report); as such, this page has been listed on the copyright problems page.

Unless the copyright status of the text of this page or section is clarified and determined to be compatible with Misplaced Pages's content license, the problematic text and revisions or the entire page may be deleted one week after the time of its listing (i.e. after 20:36, 9 April 2014 (UTC)).

What can I do to resolve the issue?
  • If you hold the copyright to this text, you can license it in a manner that allows its use on Misplaced Pages.
    1. You must permit the use of your material under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).
    2. Explain your intent to license the content on this article's discussion page.
    3. To confirm your permission, you can either display a notice to this effect at the site of original publication or send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org or a postal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. These messages must explicitly permit use under CC BY-SA and the GFDL. See Misplaced Pages:Donating copyrighted materials.
    4. Note that articles on Misplaced Pages must be written from a neutral point of view and must be verifiable in published third-party sources; consider whether, copyright issues aside, your text is appropriate for inclusion in Misplaced Pages.
  • You can demonstrate that this text is in the public domain or is already under a license suitable for Misplaced Pages. Explain this on this article's discussion page, with reference to evidence. Misplaced Pages:Public domain and Misplaced Pages:Compatibly licensed may assist in determining the status.
  • Otherwise, you may rewrite this page without copyright-infringing material. Your rewrite should be placed on this page, where it will be available for an administrator or clerk to review it at the end of the listing period. Follow this link to create the temporary subpage. Please mention the rewrite upon completion on this article's discussion page.
    • Simply modifying copyrighted text is not sufficient to avoid copyright infringement—if the original copyright violation cannot be cleanly removed or the article reverted to a prior version, it is best to write the article from scratch. (See Misplaced Pages:Close paraphrasing.)
    • For license compliance, any content used from the original article must be properly attributed; if you use content from the original, please leave a note at the top of your rewrite saying as much. You may duplicate non-infringing text that you had contributed yourself.
    • It is always a good idea, if rewriting, to identify the point where the copyrighted content was imported to Misplaced Pages and to check to make sure that the contributor did not add content imported from other sources. When closing investigations, clerks and administrators may find other copyright problems than the one identified. If this material is in the proposed rewrite and cannot be easily removed, the rewrite may not be usable.

The film is based around high school senior Devin Overstreet (Wiz Khalifa) struggling to pen his Valedictorian speech, when it becomes clear that all his academic success has left him with no real-life experiences of high school life. He finds an unlikely inspiration in the oldest student on campus, Mac Johnson (Snoop Dogg). Mac, a tenth year senior, known ladies man and heavy marijuana smoker, is overtaken by the school's new substitute chemistry teacher Ms. Huck (Teairra Mari). He soon realizes that the only way he will have a chance with her is if he finally graduates high school. In three weeks time, Mac must cram four years of high school academics, while Devin must cram four years of teenage experience into the short time. During the process they become best friends, Devin smokes marijuana and has sex for the first time and they both reach their end goals.

Release

Soundtrack

The film's soundtrack was released on December 13, 2011. The soundtrack released under the title of Mac & Devin Go to High School by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. The album's song "Young, Wild & Free" featuring Bruno Mars turned out to be a huge success worldwide, and was the most popular song from the whole soundtrack. In its first week, the track sold 159,000 digital copies, debuting at number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, and forty four on the Canadian Hot 100. Therefore, Snoop Dogg revealed in an interview that the soundtrack's success has given him the inspiration of coming up with a movie based on the song Young, Wild & Free. Soon enough, in March 2012, it was announced that Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa would star in the spin-off Mac & Devin Go to High School: The Movie. Production and filming began straight after the announcement of the film.

Announcement

Snoop Dogg announced plans for the release of a film, and soundtrack alongside with Wiz Khalifa back in January, with the release of the song "Dat Good", originally intended to be the soundtrack's lead single. Wiz Khalifa spoke on the soundtrack saying "It's a real big deal because nobody's done it like that as far as a veteran in the game, an OG, a pioneer and then the newest, youngest, most exciting dude in rap coming through, and really just giving people a complete project," Wiz said. "I'm a fan of it, separate myself from making it, a huge fan of it. Can't wait." As far as the musical vibe of the soundtrack, Snoop described it. "It's something to relax you and get you through the day; it's some real good music. The music is quality, I don't even have no title for it, as far as what kinda music is it, it's centric, it's ...," Snoop said searching for the right words before his partner-in-rhyme lent a hand.

DVD release

The film was set for a straight-to-DVD release on April 20, 2012, however was then pushed back to July 3, 2012. The film has been seen by critics, and received mixed response from most critics who have already reviewed it. As of August 2012, the DVD has sold 54,641 units in the United States.

Location controversy

A controversy occurred during the filming process of Mac & Devin Go to High School involving the main location used for the fictitious "N. Hale High." Much of the film was shot at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, after the Manhattan Beach Unified School District granted The Yard Entertainment a facilities use permit. Two days of filming were finished over the weekend of May 7, 2011, but production was halted when it was reported that individuals (some involved with the film, some not) were smoking marijuana on school campus. A student present at the shoot claimed to have seen "their entourage smoking blunts." Theft of school classrooms was also reported by teachers once classes began the next week, and The Yard reportedly reimbursed them for this.

The controversy was quelled quickly, as the school district reportedly revoked its facilities use permit. The school board claimed at the time to have returned all revenue received for the use of its school and demanded that all footage be thrown out, but as the footage was eventually used an additional, unpublished agreement must have been reached.
