Peregrine Falcon speed

Good point about claims for speed of the Peregrine Falcon being undocumented. I've heard those figures for years, and I read one original anecdote of how that was determined--a pilot in a dive at a certain speed (175 mph) had a Pergrine pass him. I think every statement about the Peregrine's top speed is based on that one anecdote. I did find some references on this:

• web page with references
• Stanford site by Paul R. Ehrlich, David S. Dobkin, and Darryl Wheye discusses Doppler radar measurements of various birds, apparently, however, not made on a Pergrine. That author quotes the 200 mph figure, but says 100 mph may be more typical, but gives no references on that statement.
• Paul R. Ehrlich, David S. Dobkin, and Darryl Wheye, 1988, The Birder's Handbook, New York: Simon and Schuster, ISBN 0-671-62133-5, source of the above quote by the authors. They give some primary references in the print version.
• Terres, 1980, Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birs, New York: Alfred A. Knopf, ISBN 0-394-46651-9 gives a number of flight speeds--gliding and flapping (28-32; 40-60; 62; all in mph) and the famous stoop speed measurement of one passing an airplane diving at 175 mph. The original reference for this is Lawson, 1930, The stoop of a hawk. Bull. Essex (Mass.) Ornith. Club 12:79-80.
• Birds of North America--this one freely available--AHA! Has an extensive discussion of speeds. Quoting and paraphrasing, for the purposes of discussion:

Stoop. Terminal velocity of 368–384 km/h (228–238 mi/h); direct measurements (airspeed indicators attached to birds, radar) recorded speeds of 111–144 km/h (66–86 mph) in less than vertical dives. Estimates made by comparison with moving aircraft range from 160 km/h (matched speed) to minimum of 280 km/h (passing aircraft; Lawson 1930--the 175 mph reference). ... They go on to quote some measurements of trained birds free-falling with skydivers at 150-200 mph.

Looks to me they can indeed dive at a typical speed of up to 90 mph. The 175 mph figure quoted by everybody is on the high end, but not impossible, IMHO, given the experience with skydivers. Perhaps you can summarize all of this in a pithy manner, if you like. Given all of this, I may be tempted to say that the fastest on the planet label given to the Peregrine may not be an urban myth. --Cotinis 17:18, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Muscovy Ducks

No idea why facts about Muscovy Ducks were removed. These ducks are a nuisance and are considered invasive in Florida. If you lived in a neighborhood where they drop their 1/3 pound of dung per day you might also consider than invasive. I have witnessed the fact that the male actually "rapes" his mate, which I find quite repulsive! Any in depth research will prove these to be facts.......sorry! Sfpc 19:07, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

I also noticed that the entry for Mallard Ducks in Misplaced Pages addresses the subject of rape

Hi Jim, I was wondering why you unblocked this user. He went on a spree of vandalism a couple days agree creating multiple attack and vanity articles, uploading obscene images, and revert warring when others attempted to remove the speedy deletion notices from those articles and images. Most of his vandalism has been deleted, thus why it would not show up in his contribs, but I found a month for that level of vandalism appropriate. I'd also note that the user now has multiple sockpuppets popping up to evade the block. I'm not going to block again without hearing back from you unless the account's vandalism becomes excessive again, but I would like to know you removed the block. Thanks. Your vandalism on Raven and Lark

• English collective nouns are a small but encyclopedic information, including collective nouns for birds. It is unencyclopedic that an English article about larks or ravens wouldn't mention somewhere their collective noun, just like it's done for Crow or Owl.
• My edits were perfectly justified with a clear, complete, and wikified summary leaving no room for misunderstandings.

• Thus, you have no excuses for your unjustified deletions of the collective noun on Raven (diff) and Lark (diff) which I can only describe as vandalism.
• Furthermore, I find out it's not the first time you're censoring it (March 2006 diff).

I am reverting them back.

P.S.: Censoring criticism on your talk page (diff) without archiving (Misplaced Pages:How to archive a talk page), is in contradiction with Misplaced Pages etiquette (Help:Talk_page#Etiquette) and most unwikipedian.

If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Misplaced Pages (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. ok, i edited the redwinged blackbird page and said that they have attacked humans. Tell me if i'm wrong or crazy or something but one attacked me twice when i went near it's nest twice. Hi, just for the record I'm not the one who deleted the image. I listed it for deletion because it was a "non-commercial only" licensed photo and I had found a 1905 (PD) painting of that bird on commons to replace it. Mike Rosoft then swooped in and deleted it stating "Unfree image, has been replaced by a Commons image". A bit hasty on his part I'll grant, and not rely a speedy deletion criterea (otherwise I would not have bothered to list it in the first place), but WP:SNOW seems to apply, the image was unfree and we have a free alternative. However if you have info that suggest otherwise you can ask Mike Rosoft to undelete it or list it on deletion review (yes, image undeletion is finaly possible (for images deleted on or after June 16 2006)). --Sherool (talk) 06:02, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the info, I have looked up the seperate page on the music guidelines as well. Would the band be a qualifying article if I mention the major acts (all of which are on wikipedia) the band has opened for during some major competions? After all one of the criteria points is "Has won or placed in a major music competition." I'll repost the article in a bit, being in a much more detailed fashion and see what you think from there. WHY HAVE YOU DELETED MY ARTICLE? I have started over 500 new articles on wiki look at my contributions. Surfing is not very well covered. Please restore it.

Yes I agree that minor unknown bands should be deleted but this is not just a surfer. He is well known worldwide to surfers and is a pioneer who set up the Jamaica surfing Association. It has its own website. But you could say that about any article that is not familiar it should be deleted if it is a stub!!. Misplaced Pages is for expansion of unknown knowledge and should not be discouraged from helping it out..
