He received a PhD from Princeton University in 1967. Levit was involved in a minor scandal when he sent an anonymous email to Mike Bayham, who writes for GOPUSA.com, in which Levitt told that his "Lab Retriever up and caught the clap when he f***** your mama", and hoped that he would die soon..
He has published the following books:

- The Flight from Science and Reason (1997)
- Prometheus Bedeviled: Science and the Contradictions of Contemporary Culture (1999)
