Thelma D. Drake (born November 20, 1949) is an American politician and a member of the Republican party from the state of Virginia. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2004 to represent the Second Congressional District of Virginia (map).
Born in Elyria, Ohio, Drake attended Elyria High School, Elyria, Ohio and Old Dominion University. She worked as a real estate agent in Norfolk, Virginia and previously was the first Republican to be elected to the Virginia House of Delegates since Reconstruction. She served in the House of Delegates for 9 years before taking her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives at the start of the 109th United States Congress on January 4, 2005. Drake had entered the 2004 congressional race less than three months before Election Day when the incumbent Republican congressman, Ed Schrock, made a surprise announcement that he was leaving the race, under a cloud of controversy.
2006 Congressional Campaign
Main article: Virginia 2nd congressional district election, 2006Drake will face Democrat Phillip Kellam in the November congressional elections. Kellam currently serves as Commissioner of the Revenue for Virginia Beach. In late June, CQPolitics wrote that the race: "is more competitive than initially expected in the Republican-leaning 2nd. This, in turn, has spurred CQPolitics.com to change its rating to Leans Republican from Republican Favored."
