rename

Hi, at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (miscellaneous)#commons interwiki we are looking for ways to remove pages which begin with "c:", so that it can become an alias for Wikimedia Commons. Any suggestions on what to rename this page? John Vandenberg 21:27, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

"C – The Contra Adventure" might be the most intuitive adaptation of the title to the proposed technical restriction.  Sandstein  12:43, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
done. John Vandenberg 04:04, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

user:INeverCry, you moved this back without consultation. In your revert you say "there is no intention of using C: or c: as a shortcut to Commons", however there is bugzilla:4676 and meta:Requests_for_comment/Wikimedia_Commons. Your revert also says "Also, there were two..." - what do you mean by that? John Vandenberg 11:04, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

The RfC has been reopened. πr (tc) 18:37, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

You cannot revert the renaming that was made to use the colon, when the redirecting page (using the hyphen or en-dash sourrounded by spaces instead of the colon+space) has been edited to add the info box.
You need an admin to delete one of the two redirect pages in order to rename this page to this deleted page; this will leave a redirect from this current title with colon, but it can be deleted if the purpose is to define the "c:" prefix for Common).
I agree that the colon is not the best option for this title, and the en-dash could be better, but not very friendly for input so we need the hyphen at least as a redirect to the page using the en-dash (don't forget in that case to update the redirect from the title using other combinations).
Given the very low importance of this topic for an old video game not very wellknown (it is not even the most well known title in this series, and people will first look for Contra, and will then navigate between them), I think that Commons can overtake the position. After all, the topic on C# is much important and still needs editing/adaptation for the page name. This videogame can still be referenced in the videogrames portal and the few other pages that link to it (most of these pages being in about the Contra series itself; the important temr here is "Contra", not "C" alone, so anything after the initial capital is definitely not an optional subtitle). The plain text search engine will still find this game.
Note: you may need to rename as well some pages on Commons using this name. verdy_p (talk) 16:24, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
I was bold and edited source links to drop the colon and even drop compeltely the notation of the commercial logogram, present only on the packaging (which is in fact not part of the game name anywhere). There are no more any direct references anywhere to the title using the colon. verdy_p (talk) 17:26, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Note: similar work to do on the Arabic, Spanish, and Russian Wikipedias (not on the Japanese, Chinese and Korean Wikipedias as these wikis use the wide ideographic colon, not followed by any space, as its standard colon).
If one wants to preserve a visual colon, the wide ideographic colon could be used in the title (though this game was never released in Japan, Korea or China but only in US). However redirects will still be preferable for US users that can't type the ideographic punctuation. Accord ing to various sources, there's no real standard about if on how we need to represent what is just a commercial logogram for the packaging (used also on other titles of the series, where it is also never detached with a colon and is just part of the name "Contra") around the effective title, which was simply "The Contra Adventure", so another candidate for renaming has been simply "The Contra Adventure".
I was bold and finally dropped that logogram after seeing that external sources were not consistant about it (and there's no more any official site for this game; if there ever was one...). So all links point now to the name without it: other redirecting pages are still there but they are no longer used anywhere; not even in Wikidata (the redirect starting with "C:" can be safely deleted if we need it as a prefix for Commons.) verdy_p (talk) 17:49, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Your bold action is ignorant and incorrect. The "C:" isn't just a logogram as you falsely assume and insist it is. Despite your arrogance and condescending tone with me, I'm going to place the proof on this talk page for the article as proof that the proper title of this game is indeed C: The Contra Adventure. For your information, just because an official website does not exist anymore for something, it does not give you the permission or right to change something about it and claim that it is valid. That is not how it works. I'll also post scans of the manual itself that supports what I state (and which applies to the other Contra games in the series whose titles lack colon only in the packaging). First off, here are the official, appropriate sources that list this game as C: The Contra Adventure:

I would provide Appaloosa's old official website, but it is no longer functional.

Many of those links above indicate that the game has only received a North American release. And guess what? The wikipedia article itself even only lists a North American release date; because that is the only region where it has received an official release. Soon, I'm going to scan each page of the game's manual where its proper title is written (ie, every page that has it). Then, it can be agreed upon by any rational person what the real title of the game is; and Verdy P can finally either admit that he's wrong, after so much stubbornness, or continue to show what kind of "wikipedia volunteer" he is.70.51.38.110 (talk) 16:10, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Request for Comments: c: link prefix for Wikimedia Commons

There is a cross-wiki discussion in progress as to whether c: should be enabled globally as an interwiki prefix for links to the Wikimedia Commons. If the proposal gains consensus this will require the deletion or renaming of several pages on the English WIkipedia whose titles begin with "C:", including one or more redirects to this page. Please take a moment to participate in the discussion.
There is also a related discussion on the English Misplaced Pages at Misplaced Pages:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 February 16#C:ATT to which you are invited to contribute.
Thank you. Thryduulf (talk) 15:39, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
