It was a popular venue for local bands and stand-up comics (the rock band Interpol played there early on and last returned in 2003 to perform a secret show under the name "Cuddleworthy"). A foosball table was located by the entrance; a game would cost $1.00 in quarters. The back showroom hosted the "Eating It" alternative weekly stand-up comedy show for several years until the bar closed in 2005, with a changing line-up featuring comedians Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Jim Norton, Ted Alexandro, Todd Barry, Jon Benjamin, Greg Giraldo, Patrice O'Neal, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Vowell, Louis C.K., Roseanne Barr, and dozens of others. The eight-dollar cover charge included a free drink.
The building that housed the establishment was only one story high. The landlord demolished it in 2005 with plans to erect a taller structure to take advantage of rising rents.
In 2005, Luna Lounge was the last bar on the Lower East Side to feature nightly rock shows with no cover. Other bands who played the venue early in their careers include The Strokes, Longwave, Ambulance LTD, Nada Surf, Ratatat, and Stellastarr*.
The bar closed its doors for the last time on the morning of June 12, 2004. The building was torn down on July 26th and 27th of that year.
