Whoever is elected will serve as Governor from 2007 to 2011. The incumbent, Democrat Phil Bredesen, is expected to run for re-election. As of July 17, Bredesen has an approval rating of 57%. The frontrunner to challenge him is Republican state senator Jim Bryson of Franklin. Another Republican candidate, Mark Albertini, was arrested in Knoxville on July 21, 2006, on charges of public intoxication following a GOP rally.
