On reflection...

In all fairness, I probably ought to help you on one of your pet projects first. --Dweller (talk) 09:07, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Think we can get an FA out of this beauty? --Dweller (talk) 09:09, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
I'll pretend I didn't see that. I need to find a Town legend, like Butcher or Mills, but as ever we'll run into lack of image issues... The Rambling Man (talk) 09:39, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Lol. Sorry, I shouldn't have done that. Assuming wooden Canadian goalkeepers are equally a no-no, how about this rather noble chap? --Dweller (talk) 11:49, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Not a bad shout at all... At least even you could get behind that Ipswich legend?! The Rambling Man (talk) 11:51, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
My hands still feel dirty from dealing with the mustachioed one. Apart from the obvious, this bloke benefits from being before my lifetime, really. --Dweller (talk) 11:54, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Sir Alf Ramsey Featured Article development project

(talk page stalker) Pardon the presumptuousness, but if you two do decide to work on Sir Alf, I'd be happy to lend a hand too if you'd like. —  Cliftonian (talk)  11:54, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Sounds great. I've ordered three books so in a week or so's time, the big push starts! The Rambling Man (talk) 12:00, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Great stuff; thanks Rambling Man. It will be great to do a football article again, and in such esteemed company. —  Cliftonian (talk)  12:03, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Quite alright. If it's okay with you two, I'll tackle his time at Ipswich, as that's so close to my heart. My grandfather spoke to Sir Alf quite a few times over the years, even back in the 1960s he was wise to the idea that football would become all about the money, that Ipswich would be a selling club.... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:11, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
Glad to have you, Cliftonian. Looking forward. I'm sure there's some preparatory work I can get cracking on from next week. --Dweller (talk) 12:13, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
It's in a poor state, particularly from a referencing perspective. Perhaps start with getting all the bare facts correct and referenced, before delving into some of the more subjective areas? The Rambling Man (talk) 12:19, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
I've made a start on the early life, using the online preview for the McKinstry biography. There weren't page numbers so I did a range of pages 1–8 as a stop-gap for now; we can come back to that later. I'm in Israel until 4 September so won't be able to get hold of relevant books until then I'm afraid. —  Cliftonian (talk)  13:28, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

@Cliftonian and Dweller: I've literally started cite-bombing by adding whatever I can find easily without too much stress that I don't believe is already in there. It's not meant to be definitive, but it's supposed to help add more and guide us when we get to more fulsome sources. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:29, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

No need to be too punctilious at this stage. We can tidy up later. —  Cliftonian (talk)  03:59, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

@Cliftonian and Dweller: I'm still waiting for my books to arrive, and hopefully tonight/tomorrow I'll get a chance to get involved. Sorry for the forced absence.... The Rambling Man (talk) 15:48, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

No worries. We're making a great start in the meantime (IMHO). There's absolutely oodles to do. --Dweller (talk) 16:00, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Good show indeed both. The skeleton of the FA is starting to take shape. —  Cliftonian (talk)  07:24, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Doubled in bytes in six days, that's a good effort! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:08, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

TRM, there's a number of talk page issues to chat through, when you have a moment. --Dweller (talk) 09:39, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

I'll get there once I've fed and watered and put Junior to bed. At least I've now got a couple of the books I ordered! The Rambling Man (talk) 10:11, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Nudge

I've come across this image on Commons, the cryptically-named "Anefo.jpg", which on closer inspection seems to show John Wark playing for Ipswich away at Standard Liege. Probably a pre-season friendly, judging from the small crowd. Might be nice for his article? I recommend renaming it to something more helpful as well. Cheers —  Cliftonian (talk)  04:37, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

What a great shot! And a wonderful find, excellent, I'll see if I can insert it after breakfast. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:25, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Great shot. Hopefully it missed. --Dweller (talk) 13:28, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Bootham Crescent

Hi, would you or @Dweller: mind reviewing Bootham Crescent when you have a moment? Although I do appreciate you're busy with Operation Alf Ramsey :) Mattythewhite (talk) 19:49, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

I will definitely do that, as long as you get on board Operation Alf and help us out there, even if it's just to make the pledge and review our work! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:06, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
I'll happily review it once you lot have worked your magic #OperationAlf Mattythewhite (talk) 21:20, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Mattythewhite Missed this, sorry. Peer Review? That's a blast from the past! I'd be happy to. --Dweller (talk) 13:29, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

@Dweller: Just wondering if you had more to add to this review, and if you think the article is around the level necessary for FAC? Mattythewhite (talk) 11:47, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
Gosh, thanks for the reminder. I'd say skip the rest of the PR and just go for FAC. You'll get a gazillion contradictory comments anyway and they might as well be at one venue. --Dweller (talk) 11:49, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
By the way, good job on avoiding recentism in the History section. --Dweller (talk) 11:50, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Popular but disruptive

It was disconcerting to see a routine block of a disruptive editor blow up to the point that I lost my bit simply because TRM was a populur disruptive editor.

Popular? Disruptive? Simple? Dead horse? The Rambling Man (talk) 15:04, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

You're popular with me, but you do disrupt my pedantic wikignoming, forcing me instead to produce most of 'my' 18 Featured Articles. --Dweller (talk) 15:28, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
I have had previous dealings with you, Rambling Man. In my experience, you have been the best administrator at Misplaced Pages, which I made note of here . I don't know if your memory goes back quite that far, but I was incredibly impressed by how you handled that issue. A good deed never goes unpunished! =) AmericanDad86 (talk) 22:30, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
My only gripe with you is that you're boat race featured articles are so bloody good! Damn you're annoying! Cassianto 22:36, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
routine block of a disruptive editor of an editor of good standing with 134,000 edits? Perhaps this particular blocking (former) admin is lacking a clue? Lacking the ability to make a suitable judgement? We'll never know, thankfully. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:45, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Cricket page moves

Hi Rambles. Both myself and PeeJay2K3 had the same idea at the same time to create pages for England's upcoming matches against Sri Lanka (see this). Please can you move Sri Lankan cricket team in England in 2016 to Sri Lankan cricket team in England and Ireland in 2016 and keep the redirect? Thanks. Lugnuts 13:56, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)Done. Harrias 14:20, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

@Lugnuts, PeeJay2K3, and Harrias: Why should not add the scorecard links, they are available. The tour include two tour matches also. Srinu 18:13, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

This is not the right forum to harass people about things like this. TRM ends up with enough harassment on his talk page! Harrias 18:28, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
It's ok Harrias, I'm nothing much more than a popular disruptive editor in any case, I've just stepped in from a lovely day out with family and friends, and I'm just about to get a pizza, so life is good. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:37, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

FLC

Boy, you're churning through them at the moment! Any chance you could take a look at Misplaced Pages:Featured list candidates/List of centuries scored on Test cricket debut/archive1. Once that one is stable with some supports, I'm hoping to open the List of international goals scored by Bobby Charlton nomination. Harrias 20:27, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Yes, and yes, and yes. I'm all over FLC with my own noms and have a mini-queue ready to go every time I get a promotion, but yes, I'll review the debut list tomorrow, and I'll give you some pre-emptive thoughts on Bobby's list too, before you nom it if you can wait until, say, tomorrow lunchtime. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:29, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, no rush! Atapattu, and a few of the other lists you have lined up might have issues with very short parent articles. Harrias 20:32, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Fair enough, I don't mind be called out on 3b, it was just a nice thing to complete the template with FLs. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:33, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
I agree, I've got some stuff about it here: User:Harrias/progress. I'm expanding Greenidge in one of my sandboxes, and have started to get a bit carried away, but it shouldn't be too much effort to bring the others up to a reasonable length to avoid 3b complaints. Harrias 20:39, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Looking back, I'm somewhat disappointed by the Atapattu bio, I guess the best thing, as you've alluded to, is to make that better, then the list can survive. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:42, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
I'll try and throw some stuff at the main bio over the weekend if I can. Harrias 20:46, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Cool, you don't need to do that, but thanks. I'm surprised at the poor coverage of such seminal cricketers, but perhaps my focus has been elsewhere. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:47, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Like you say, we have thousands of words on mediocre modern players (something I'm adding to with an expansion of Kieswetter at the moment), but some of the past greats have little more than "So and so was a Fooian cricketer who scored heap loads and was particularly good in this series, although he had an argument with what's his name, and retired from international cricket in YYYY before playing for six more years in county cricket." Harrias 20:49, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Klose

Thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately, I'm not so confident. You see, apart from the summary, the goals all come from one source, eu-football.info. Granted, it's in our rules to fish from third-party sources, but I think perhaps too much information is hinging on just one citation. And I must apologise for making lists for international goals of mediocre players, I was panicking after the WT:FOOTY consensus to wipe out international goals. I think now it's a bit clearer now that players like Klose and Rooney fit a bill that Robert Earnshaw and Nene maybe don't.

Funny you mention FLs, I was making one earlier. '''tAD''' (talk) 20:33, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

I think I should be OK. It's quite obviously easier to find English references for his goals in the World Cup than it is for friendlies played in Japan, if I run into a wall in that regard I will enquire to mein Freund from over the sea User:Zwerg Nase '''tAD''' (talk) 20:36, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated. But please, your work on Sir Alf must take precedence! I know that On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog, but I don't think you have more time on your hands than a 19-year-old university student '''tAD''' (talk) 20:41, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

In your infinite wisdom, could you make it so the "Reference" column just says "Ref", but when you hover over there will be a box saying "Reference"? At the moment, it makes the column too wide. Thank you '''tAD''' (talk) 21:22, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

It's done. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:26, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry to reply so late. What can I help with? Sources for international goals of Klose? www.transfermarkt.de is quite a good source for things like that. Zwerg Nase (talk) 07:19, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

WE DID IT!!!!! '''tAD''' (talk) 14:34, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

@The Almightey Drill: good stuff, just need to rework the lead a little and it's good for FLC! Good work! The Rambling Man (talk) 15:57, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

WBCM-LP

Thanks for the corrections on the WBCM page. I noted the removal of the "LaunchDate" source and I understand why it was removed. I attempted to find any reliable soruce (ie: newspaper, TV station article, etc.) I could find but came up empty. All I found were links back to the Facebook post and mirrors of the Misplaced Pages page itself. I tried numerous search word combinations, but came up empty.

The Facebook page itself is the official Facebook page of the radio station, so I'm not sure if that makes anymore reliable or not. I am open to any ideas you may have...and will continue looking. - NeutralhomerTalk19:34, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

I sympathise. Perhaps there are some paper sources that you could locate? I have access to a couple of resources, but haven't found anything. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:39, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I wish I could find a paper source, but I'm about 300+ miles away from Bristol on the northern end of the state. :) Good thing, though, is what is in the Bristol, VA paper is on their site. Bad thing, they don't mention the August 8 "soft launch" for program testing. I am still looking, right now digging through the FCC website. - NeutralhomerTalk19:43, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I've exhausted every search word combination I can think of. Checked every site from local TV news, to newspapers and beyond. I have a message into a friend to see if he can help. Short of that, I got nothin'. - NeutralhomerTalk20:08, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Well what can I say? We don't use Facebook or Twitter as reliable sources, you've undone my edit, I'm not going to edit war over it. I hope something more appropriate can be found in the future. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:19, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I'm not arguing, I'm genuinely asking for help. I reverted so it has a reference (of what it is) for the time being, while I/we look for a better source. - NeutralhomerTalk20:23, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Me neither, you re-added the unreliable source, right? The Rambling Man (talk) 20:24, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, so it has something for a source. Even if it is un-reliable, it has something until I/we can find something better. Something's better than nothin'. - NeutralhomerTalk20:27, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure that's how Misplaced Pages works. An unreliable source is as bad, if not worse, than no source. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:38, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I kinda agree with ya, but I would rather have bad than . To be honest, I didn't think it would take this long to find another source. - NeutralhomerTalk20:50, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

I gave up. Since the official launch, technically, didn't take place until August 27, I'm changing with a better source (newspaper article). I personally don't like it, but since I have nada for sources, it's the best I can do. - NeutralhomerTalk21:09, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

WP:SOCIALMEDIA suggests that actually Facebook would probably be acceptable as a source for this, as "Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves" There are a few limits set after, but I think in this case they are met okay. Harrias 06:35, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
@Harrias: So since it is the station's official Facebook page, it would be a reliable source? - NeutralhomerTalk23:59, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks so much for GA checking Go to the Future! If you have some spare time, would you be able to go over Shin-shiro and Kikuuiki too? Pompey

Did Ramsey really play for Pompey? --Dweller (talk) 15:43, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Bowler says no, but I'm only on page 30. He signed the papers as an amateur at Pompey, but they didn't get back to him. Almost as archaic and ridiculous as de Gea's saga at United. Bowler goes on to describe his playing for Soton during the war, so I'm not sure where the Pompey stuff (especially the Youth career section of the infobox) gets that from, unless it's literally referring to him signing and never playing and never getting a response... The Rambling Man (talk) 17:57, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
I think not, I believe the 1940–43 in the infobox reflects the fact he signed for Portsmouth, and nothing more. I can't find anything to suggest he ever played for them. I guess unless someone helpful (e.g. Bencherlite) who has access to university library stuff and can check out the years covered in Ramsey's early autobiography Talking Football, we should just remove Pompey from the infobox and leave the mention of him "signing" yet never hearing back. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Methinks you are confusing me with a young person, m'lud - I left university some years ago, and unless the book is in a legal library I'm unlikely to get hold of a copy... Bencherlite 20:20, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I thought you still had access to Bodleian. Won't ask again... The Rambling Man (talk) 20:21, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Even my alumni-type extension card expired years ago... and I can't remember the last time I went in it! Bencherlite 20:41, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I think it's been made up. Or at the very least, it's very dubious. We should reflect the RS. --Dweller (talk) 20:47, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Well it's not made up, he signed for Portsmouth, they just never got back to him. The RS (Bowler, McKinstry) that I have both say that clearly. The Rambling Man (talk) 05:05, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
TRM, I meant that this bit is made up or dubious: "Ramsey played for Portsmouth in the London War League in 1942" --Dweller (talk) 09:22, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Probably yes, I wasn't ruling it out, but it's gone now. If I find anything about it when I get more time to do the research, I'll bring the topic back to the article talk page. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:23, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Good stuff. It's not impossible, given the chronology, that he played some games for them between (or during) the army stuff and before going to Soton, but we can only deal with what we can evidence. --Dweller (talk) 09:28, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Out it comes then. —  Cliftonian (talk)  05:08, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi! I see you've done many GA reviews, and I'm new to this. I was wondering if you'd be willing to check my work on my GA review for Traci Lords: Underneath It All. Review is at Talk:Traci Lords: Underneath It All/GA1. If you can't, no problem, I can totally ask someone else! valereee (talk) 16:18, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I would be happy to do this. Of course it's borderline for doing at work so it may take me a few days to get to it, but I'll take the review and see how we go. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:58, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
No problem, and thanks! The issue is with assessing a source as 'reliable' which supports a contentious assertion re: a living person. It's the final sentence in the 'Critical response' section. Much appreciated! valereee (talk) 16:15, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - Round 3

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - Round 3

Greetings, all! We hope that everyone had a nice summer.

Saturday saw the end of Round 2. Things went relatively smoothly this month. The top 2 from 4 pools, plus the top participant (the wildcard, or "9th place") of all remaining competitors, moved onto Round 3. We had one withdrawal early in Round 2, so he was replaced by the next-highest scorer from Round 1. Round 2's highest scorer was Pool D's Tomandjerry211, who earned an impressive 366 points; he also reviewed the most articles (19). Close behind was Zwerg Nase, also in Pool D, at 297 points and 16 articles. The wildcard slot went to Good888. Congrats to all!

Round 3 will have 9 competitors in 3 pools. The key to moving forward was reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates, as it has been in every round up to now. For example, 2 competitors only needed to review 2 articles each to win in their pools, and each article were either from the pink nomination box (20 points) or had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup continues to be a success in many ways, even with fewer competitors this time. For some reason, the competitors in the 2015 GA Cup have reviewed fewer articles in Round 2, which has made the judges scratch their head in confusion. We've speculated many reasons for that: the summer months and vacations, our competitors are saving their strength for the final rounds, or they all live in the Pacific Northwest and the heavy wildfire smoke has affected their thinking. Whatever the reason, Round 2 competitors reviewed almost 100 articles, which is a significant impact in the task of reviewing articles for GA status. We've considered that the lower participation this competition is due to timing, so we intend to discuss the best time frame for future GA Cups.

For Round 3, participants have been placed randomly in 3 pools of 3 contestants each; the top editor in each pool will progress, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on September 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on September 28 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here.

Good luck to the remaining contestants, and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6 and Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.
