Etymology

Garabaghlar is a name of Turkic origin and means "black gardens" which implies that the city was founded by the Garabagh, one of the arms of anciant turkish tribe Kangarli.

History

In the middle ages, Garabaghlar was one of the ancient cities of the Azerbaijan. Thanks to its location along the main caravan routes linking Europe with the Middle East, the craftsmanship, trade and the economy have been highly developed in the city. The city, as the seen from its name, was covered with a large garden and greenery. Ditches were built from the small rivers and springs flowing from the mountains. City has been popular with fruits and types of grapes.

Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi (17th century) has described Garabaghlar as a great city located between orchards in his work "Seyahatname". According to him, in the 17th century, about 50 thousand people lived in the Garabaghlar; there were 10 thousand houses, 70 mosques, 40 minaret, a large caravanserai, market, bath-house and etc. In the XVII-XVIII centuries the city has declined as a result of feudal wars and infighting. 2 thousand people lived in Garabaghlar at the beginning of the 20th century. Not only of Azerbaijan, but also one of the architectural masterpieces of Asia, Garabaghlar architectural complex is in the north west of the village.

Ethnicity

Garabaghlar is a turkic tribe. They are one of the branch of the ancient kangar tribe. At the beginning of the first century AD, kangars who settled in the territory of Azerbaijan, lived in the western part of the Caucasian Albania (now Gazakh-Agstafa region), and also lived in Nakhchivan. One of their branches has been called Garabaghlar. It cohere with the information of the 10th century author Konstantin Baqryanarodnıy about a tribe called qarabay one of the tribes of pecheneg-kangars, who lived in the fields of Southern Russia. In the middle of the 18th century, the khan of the Karabakh Khanate, Panah Ali Khan has resettled part of the kangarli tribes which was known as a warlike tribe from the Nakhchivan to the Karabakh. Presumably, the tribe of Garabagh have been among them. The name of the villages of Garabaghlar in the different regions of Azerbaijan, including the village Garabaghlar in the Kangarli district are connected with the name of the this tribe.
