He was the longest serving Grand Master, holding the position for 31 years.
Winrich von Kniprode was born in 1310 in Monheim am Rhein near Köln. Between 1338 and 1341 he was the komturof Danzig, 1341 -1343 the komtur of Balga and since 1341 he was the Grand Marshal. Von Kniprode was chosen as the 22nd Grand Master in 1351. He was constantly fighting with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to gain access to Latvia which he purchased earlier from Denmark. Winrich von Kniprode died in 1382 and was buried in the Malbork Castle in the mausoleum under the Chapel of St. Anna.
