Regarding the Assam Page

The page seems to be very very disputed. Some people are changing the page just for the sake of it. I've seen one person (or many) are making changes. These people do not care to sign their postings on the discussion pages. What should we do?

Kachwaha "king Ram Singh"

It's extrememly improbable that "Kachwaha", an Indian state at the western edge of India, second farthest from Assam (which lies in India's eastern-most region), is responsible for producing "King Ram Singh", viceroy of Dhaka, Bangladesh (directly to the south of Assam)! Incidentally, I will be editing the reference to "Kachwaha" in this article.

ALSO, I noticed that the linked references to Raja Ram Singh point to an article which can't possibly describe the same Ram Singh of Dhaka, Commander-in-Chief of the Mugal forces in the Battle of Saraighat. No article exists for this particular Ram Singh, so I will also be deleting the links to the incorrect man of the same name.

You seem to have the greatest interest in maintaining these Assam-related pages, so I hope you find these edits appropriate. Of course (as it should be), I am open to discuss the issue (if one arises from my edits), and will respect any justifiable reversions. shabbs 08:48, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Begging your pardon! I see now my error, particularly in refering to Ram Singh as "viceroy of Dhaka". Still, regading a couple of your statements in your reply to me: "The then governor of Dhaka could not keep Guwahati" - I realize that, and that this was Mir Jumla, who is directly refered to in the article; "That the commander was Kachwaha king Raja Ram Singh is well documented in history and there is no room for speculation," - I must point out that it hasn't been documented here, until you placed it into the article, and my efforts to corroborate that addition with other India and/or Assam articles (admittedly NOT exhaustive) turned up naught. I can perfectly understand if your addition is "well documented" and uncontested in the regions of the world where this history originates from, but for people of other regions, there is plenty of room for "speculation".
anyway, it was not my intention to challenge you, or documented history, and I thought I had expressed that when I explained my rationale for my edits. It appears I have offended, and if I have, I am gravely sorry. shabbs 14:02, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
Which historical sources have you looked up? Mughal chronicles have references to these incidents. And no, it was not Mir Jumla who could not keep Guwahati. Mir Jumla had in fact captured the capital of the Ahom kingdom, but he could not keep it. He struck a treaty with the Ahom king, whereby he got Guwahati. On his way back, he died. At the time of Ahom retaliation when they took back Guwahati, Mir Jumla had been dead for a few years. Chaipau 14:18, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I used the links in the article itself. I looked up names and places with the search tool. I found several items that appeard to be questionable, for one reason or another, and I changed them, as I saw fit ("Be bold"). Anything that I changed in the article was based on related materials, found in the links contained in the article. When you added Kachwaha, I checked it out. It didn't seem, to me, to have a single thing to say about the Battle of Saraighat, or any of the important names or related places and people, including Ram Singh. Searches of the word, "Kachwaha", didn't seem to list any of the pages linked to the Battle article, either. I couldn't see the relation, plus (after checking out the geographic locations of all the places involved, and Kachwaha) it reasoned that the commander of the mughals would've been much more likely to have come from the same nation, especially to a cultural outsider. So I changed it.

I restate myself: "I hope you find these edits appropriate." And, "it was not my intention to challenge you, or documented history...". Wasted word? shabbs 16:57, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

The original link in the Battle of Saraighat page was to Ram Singh. As you can see, it is a wrong link. To identify the correct Ram Singh, I inserted the Kachwaha link and removed the link to Ram Singh. This is the historically correct link. And your words are not wasted. I do appreciate your efforts to set it right. Till there appears a page for Raja Ram Singh, I think it should stay the way it is. Chaipau 17:31, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
As you wish.

Assam to Asom

Hello! Thanks for your message on my talk page. I'm sorry I misspelled the word. Also lots of appology for having thought that the name was actually changed. However, to my knowledge, it has indeed been changed to Asom. Well, thats what all the news papers had carried. I also checked a few websites to confirm it . They also state that the name has indeed been changed. But I believe you are from Assam, and know better about this. But I would request you to check this matter, on whether there was an official confirmation or not. thunderboltz

Assamese transliteration

Hi Chaipau,

If you'd like to take care of the Assamese transliterations on Misplaced Pages, I think that would be great. My input on Assamese can only go so far, and really a native speaker should be in charge. I saw that you have begun the process with Brahmaputra and whatnot (sorry if I changed your transliteration incorrectly!), and I think it would be nice to have the Bengali- and Assamese-related articles have their titles fully transliterated over time. Thanks for being interested in this sort of thing - for a while I felt like I was the only one who cared about it, and I'm not even Assamese! --SameerKhan 19:33, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Ahom as stub?

I'm trying to reduce the number of stubs in Category:Indian history stubs and Ahom doesn't seem like a stub to me. Do you mind if I remove it's stub status and add it to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject History of India#To do list instead? KalevTait 04:07, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Ram Singh's army

Hi,

I e-mailed the blogger for his source on the numbers with Ram Singh and he said it was from "History of Aurangzeb" by Sir Jadunath Sarkar. You need to add the reason for sending Ram Singh (punishment for the escape of Shivaji) and the presence of Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur in the invading army.

The reason for sending Ram Singh to Assam is very clear. After the death of Mir Jumla who had occupied the Ahom capital and who had signed the Treaty of Ghilajharighat, the Ahoms were consolidating their rule and drove out the Mughals from Guwahati and beyond (west). That Aurangzeb sent Ram Singh as a punishment is speculative, even if it come from Jadunath Sarkar. Because Ram Singh went right back to the Mughal court after the Battle of Saraighat and remained with Aurangzeb as a trusted Rajput king. In anycase, Ram Singh did not come alone. He came with other Mughal generals and nobles.
Further, the presence of the Sikh Guru is not important for the Battle of Saraighat because the Guru remained in Dhubri, which is a few hundred kilometers west of Saraighat. Dhubri was not a part of the Ahom kingdom, even after the Mughals were driven out of Kamrup for the last and final time by a later Ahom king. So I do not see how the presence of this Guru is pertinent to the Battle of Saraighat. Chaipau 02:45, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Category:People of Assam vs. Category:Assamese people

Why not move the category?Bakaman Bakatalk 03:15, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

You may be interested in this discussion . Consensus indicates that we will be categorizing by ethnicity so CAtegory:Tripuris, Category:Kashmiri people and Category:Assamese people will be used.Bakaman Bakatalk 01:22, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Could you explain where Hajo is?

I would like these articles about the help temples need in India to get some exposure, but I don't know where to put them. I tried to figure out where Hajo is but I guess I was wrong. Do you have any suggestions? Mattisse(talk) 12:48, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Assamese city names

Hi Chaipau, could you help me in writing down the names of some Assamese towns in Bangla script? Or you can provide me with transliteration. I am creating articles on Indian cities using a bot (ported from Ganeshkbot).

If you can do it, drop me a note on my talk page. I'll send you the city names. Thanks. --Ragib 05:46, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for your reply. I've emailed you the list of Assamese towns. Translate at your own pace ... and mail them back to me when you are done. Thanks in advance. --Ragib 23:22, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Hi... I'm interested in doing a collaboration on the Barak River and Barak Valley. I probably can do a lot of copy editing and researching but I might need some help from you. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Take care.--Antorjal 15:30, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Antorjal, Please go ahead. I shall definitely help, as much as I can. Chaipau 22:27, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Re

If I recreate Category:People of Assam then it would automatically be moved to Category:People from Assam. As I recall, there is tons of Bengalis in Assam. Bengalis arent ethnic Assamese, the two are different. Lachit should not be in the same cat as a famous Bengali from Assam.Bakaman Bakatalk 00:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

If a Bengali can call as his won the land that Lachit defended, what is the problem? Chaipau 14:30, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Also, in that mold then Category:Tripuris would have been moved to Category:People from Tripura. Bengalis are a majority in Tripura so then ethnic Tripuris woukld be unrepresented in their own cat.Bakaman Bakatalk 00:57, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about the demographics of Assam, but what about Bodos? Are they part of the Assamese ethnic group? Is Assamese a regional or ethnic category? Is "Assamese people" a distinct ethnic group? From the Assam article this is not clear to me. (Pardon my ignorance, please). --Ragib 01:08, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
It is not appropriate to put the Bodos in the Assamese group, not at present. The Bodos did identify with the Assamese in the past, but much water has passed since then. The best I can think of is that the Assamese do not form an ethnic group itself, but contains within itself different ethnic groups. Chaipau 14:58, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
I made a discussion for this here. Please take some time to voice your opinion on the Assamese matter.Bakaman Bakatalk 01:14, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I also created Category:Bodo people.`Bakaman Bakatalk 01:27, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Just as not all people in Bengal are Bengali, not all people in Assam are Assamese. As I mentioned, there could be Category:Assamese people, but that group is not synonymous with Category:People from Assam. Also thanks to User:Bakasuprman for creating Category:Bodo people. Chaipau 11:17, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I replied to your concerns on the talk page. If they are Assamese then there is no need categorizing them under the "people from Assam" cat they are "assamese people". If they are Bengali/Bodo/Meitei/etc. then "People from Assam" could/should be used.Bakaman Bakatalk 23:54, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Assamese people are also people from Assam and they rightfully belong there. Do not make a special category. Chaipau 01:09, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
ALright, Category:Assamese people can be a subcat of {{:Category:People from Assam]]. And i never had a problem with the "historical people" cat.Bakaman Bakatalk 04:13, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. You mean for Misplaced Pages. Chaipau 01:11, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
I meant for you to add to. Also, geocities isnt really a great source to cite. Just the heads up, if you can find the info at a more reliable source, its better not to cite geocities links.Bakaman Bakatalk 22:21, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
I am citing the Assam Tribune article by Mitra Phukan, not geocities, but linking to the geocities article because it is not on the Assam Tribune archives. Bipuljyoti Saikia, who maintains the geocities site, is a well known poet himself, and his site is reliable. Look around yourself (). He picks up article that had appeared in newspapers, takes the adequate permissions and puts them up on his site. Chaipau 11:51, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Help

(reply on my talk plz) For some reason, every user besides you from the NE is inactive. Do you know any user that knows Kokborok and Bodo ? Bakaman Bakatalk 03:15, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

And also do you know much about Meghalaya and Mizoram? Like notable poeple from either state? Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura seem to be in the best shape of all the seven sisters because they are all around and include geo, hist and people.Bakaman Bakatalk 03:20, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for spotting the 'major delete' at Assam. I do not know what happened when I was trying to fix units, but you spotted it and corrected it. I have tried again.

Thanks and keep up the good work. bobblewik 18:08, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
