It is a very common name in much of the English-speaking world. In the UK, Ian was the 19th most common male name, taking account of the whole population (over 300,000 Ians in total). However, it has disappeared from the top 100 male baby names. In the United States, however, it is now becoming more popular, currently at number 68 in the baby name charts. Many notable people in many different walks of life have been given it as a first name.
