- The University of Wisconsin became ambiguous with the subsequent renaming of several of the state's universites beginning in 1956 with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus and continued with Green Bay (1968) and Parkside (1968).
- The name was of University of Wisconsin System, which has been informally known as the University of Wisconsin since its founding in 1971.
