He became famous in the late 1970s as a religious preacher. He was brought into politics by the son of Indira Gandhi, who wanted to use him as a puppet leader against the influence of the Akali party. After he got involved in state politics, he eventually demanded a separate theocratic Sikh state.
He established his headquarters in the Golden Temple also known as Harmindar Sahib, located in Amritsar. He filled it with armed militants, and launched a series of terrorist attacks, targeted both at civilian as well as military targets, as well as his political opponents. Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, decided to storm the temple have him evicted, and sent Indian troops in to remove him. A fierce battle broke out in which Bhindranwale himself was killed with his followers.
