The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) is a Washington, D.C.-based think tank established in 2001 by Kathleen Newland and Demetrios G. Papademetriou.
MPI supports liberal immigration policies.
About
Migration Policy İnstitution was established by Demetrios G. Papademetriou and Kathleen Newland in 2001. Migration Policy Institute launched MPI Europe in 2011 in Brussels. MPI also publishes an online journal, the Migration Information Source, which provides information, thoughts, and analyses of international migration and refugee trends.
MPI organizes an annual Immigration Law and Policy Conference in cooperation with Georgetown University Law Center and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.
MPI’s research is mainly focused on 4 aspects of immigration:
- Migration Management;
- Refugee Protection and International Humanitarian Response;
- North American Borders and Migration Agenda;
- Immigrant Settlement and Integration
Management
Andrew Selee is the President of MPI.
Criticism
Several reports by MPI have been criticized by immigration analysts.
In 2013, MPI published a report arguing that the United States spends more on immigration enforcement than all other countries in the world combined. Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, pointed out that MPI mistakenly counted the entire budget of ICE and CBP as "enforcement", when much of the money spent by those agencies is unrelated to immigration.
