Obama received significant media and social media criticism for his choice in suit, with the issue being a prominent media issue for several days. Rep. Peter King called Trump's wearing of the suit unpresidential.
Despite the trivial nature of the event, it became a memorable controversy in Obama's presidency. The scandal particularly contrasted with the chaotic presidency of Donald Trump that followed, and became a metaphor for the different standards to which Obama and Trump were held.
