Welcome

Hello and welcome to Misplaced Pages!

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or editing existing articles: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you want to see what other users are doing at the moment, have a look at recent changes. This is a good way to find random articles you might be interested on working on, or you can simply enjoy reading what other wikipedians have to say. Every article has a Talk page (like this one) where you can raise questions or suggest a direction for an article to take. When you make edits to a page, it's a very good idea to add a few words to the summary field to let other users know what you just did (anything from typo to rewrote article)!

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: fabiform | talk. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Again, welcome! :) fabiform | talk 14:52, 10 Feb 2004 (UTC)

hi ferkelparade, just wanted to mention, that it is quit difficult with german "slangs". it might be ok with the weisswurst/weisswürscht, cause it was invented in munich. but should the english wikipedia link to the brezel, brezn or breze? you spent time in southern-germany i guess? greetings from munich, Softeis 20:17, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:Weisswurst btw: I HATE "Weisswürscht"!!!!!! ;-) greetz. Nicky knows e 20:19, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi guys, one could say I spent some time in Southern Germany...was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, grew up in Swabia and have been living in Munich for about 10 years now :P anyway, spellings of German food stuff are always comlicated, see Talk:Weisswurst for the Weisswurst. About Brezen: I once had a long discussion about the correct spelling here. I changed the link to Brezen because there is already an article at Breze, and I don't think we need a second one at Brezen. Maybe we need a couple redirects from Brezel, Brezen etc...?

Was marking the addition of a {{vfd}} here marked minor on purpose? You might want to reconsider that policy, it is after all rather a significant event in an article's life and should definately be noted by everyone watching the article. --fvw 12:34, 2004 Oct 20 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, my mistake...shouldn't edit while I'm on the phone, I guess... -- Ferkelparade π 12:37, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
No problem, mistakes will happen and this wasn't a bad one. Just don't try and pull that sort of stuff with Main Page *grins*. Keep up the good work! --fvw 13:02, 2004 Oct 20 (UTC)

Sant_Cassia You may see that the votes for deletion have come up, many times for the page listed regarding Sant_Cassia, I object to the edit wars which have been placed, and object the pages creation and its links. The information is owned by the Sant Cassia Family, copyvio was added because there is no referencing to any information given or taken from other web sites. There is a difference between knowning what is correct and making things up to discredit people.Ghariexem[[User_talk:Ghariexem|

A couple of points in reply:
  • There is nothing wrong with objecting to the contents of a page if it is factually incorrect, misleading, slanderous or whatever - just go ahead and edit it, or place it on VfD if you think there is no merit at all to an article. However, just blanking a page without comment is not acceptable under any circumstances, and I have not seen any real reason why the article in question should be deleted.
  • Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the previous VfD history of the artile, but if it survived several times already, it looks like there is in fact no solid reason for deletion.
  • Placing an article on VfD and on speedy at the same time does not make any sense and makes you look like you're wildly thrashing around in an attempt to get rid of an article - I removed the speedy delete notice because being listed on VfD is enough.
  • And lastly, the copyvio notice was pure nonsense - copyright violation is a rather specific, narrowly-defined term that does not apply in this case.
Cheers, Ferkelparade π 15:26, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Points noted , yes i object to it all, and when i have done in the past, it just gets reverted, or edited again by the same person everytime. Im not a great whizz at wikipedia, sorry for the quick copyvio and quick deletion notices. we object to the person editing and changing the page, the sant_cassia page is fine , just the links out of it. ghariexem

VfD Correction

Thank you for fixing The Ravaged VfD page. I bolded delete because the original author had written it in caps, which appeared to mean that he wanted to highlight it, but in hindsight I do see how that could be misleading. Thanks for the catch. Skyler1534 23:25, Oct 20, 2004 (UTC)

Isbjørnklubbe

Actually, I erred. Isbjørnklubbe has its headquarters in Hammerfest, not Stavanger. The only way I know to join is to go to Hammerfest, which I got to via the Hurtigruten. It is also called "The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society". They have a gathering in Hammerfest every September, basically a community fair, I think. The Isbjørnklubbe is devoted to preserving not only the population of polar bears, but also the arts of polar bear hunting. My main activity is wearing the very warm wool baseball cap with earflaps with the society name (in English, alas) and a picture of a polar bear embroidered on it, but I also have a certificate of membership.

From http://www.hammerfest.kommune.no/english.html: "The Royal & Ancient Polar Bear Society Is a museum aiming to show Hammerfest¹s long and proud traditions as an arctic hunting town. A visit here can be concluded with signing an exclusive membership in the club."

To me, the most striking memory I have of the north of Norway is the chronicles of the devastation wrought by the occupying and then retreating German armies in World War 2. Ortolan88 18:07, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Adminship

I've nominated you for adminship on WP:RFA. You can accept or decline the nomination there. Cheers! JOHN COLLISON 18:54, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sibiu article

hi there Ferkelparade

I'm reverting the article prior to your copyvio warning. you should have discussed with the author of the Sibiu article before issuing the copyvio warning. Criztu 14:50, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

No, please do not just revert. As I just said at WP:CP, this does not solve the copyvio problem at all - when you just revert over a copyright violation, the copyrighted text still remains in the database (not in the current article, but in the edit history), and all legal problems arising from the copyright violation still exist. It admittedly sucks, but when someone decides to paste copyrighted text into an otherwiese decent article, we can only delete and rewrite to get rid of the copyrighted stuff. And please don't accuse me of ruining the article, I just spotted the copyright violation - blame the anon user who pasted copyrighted text in the first place. -- Ferkelparade π 14:56, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Have you consulted with the author of the SIbiu article, before issuing the copyvio warning ? the article was written in 2003, while the only material susceptible of copyroght violation is the Turism paragraph, which you could have easily erased without compromising the whole Sibiu Misplaced Pages Article Criztu 15:02, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well...that's exactly the problem: you cannot erase material from the edit history without deleting the article. The only solution is to place the last good version of the article at the "Temp" location that is automaticlly created when an article is tagged as a copyvio, and wait for an admin to clean up (delete the oricinal and make the temp page the new article). I admit that the Sibiu article has been sitting on copyvio for too long without anyone taking action - I'd do the cleanup right now, but unfortunately I am not an admin and cannot delete the original article :P -- Ferkelparade π 15:08, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

i see what you mean, but i think you should have consulted the Wikipedian who wrote the article in 2003 prior to anything else. It is perfectly possible that the site you concluded the information was stolen from could have easily copy-pasted from Misplaced Pages Sibiu Article ... what should we do next, erase whole Misplaced Pages because of countless websites that copy-paste from Misplaced Pages without mentioning that ? Criztu 15:14, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

i appologise for reverting the article ... user Icebox seems to have copy-pasted from www.sibiu.ro and providede the link to this official site... what should we do ? we have to put the article online Criztu 15:22, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hmm...your best bet right now would be to do all the changes you think are necessary to the temp article (that already exists and contains a version prior to the insertion of copyrighted material) and contact an admin to do the cleanup. A list of admins can be found at Misplaced Pages:List of administrators. Cheers, -- Ferkelparade π 15:31, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

:) I apologize for being unsure of what to do exactly in the situation created by Icebox copyvio on Sibiu article. the following sentence is taken from Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems - Pages where the most recent edit is a copyright violation, but the previous article was not, should not be deleted. They should be reverted. The violating text will remain in the page history for archival reasons unless the copyright holder asks the Wikimedia Foundation to remove it. See Misplaced Pages:Page history for details Criztu 16:37, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Oh, ok. I always assumed it was standard policy to delete articles with copyvio material in the history because that's what usually seems to be done on WP:CP and because it makes sense from a legal point of view. Bit I see there seems to be no general policy on that and there alrady was some discussion on this. So it seems in this case it's indeed okay to just revert to the previous version (before the copyrighted material was insterted) and work from there. Sorry for the confusion :P -- Ferkelparade π 17:01, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Misplaced Pages fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Congratulations!

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 19:45, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Congrats, Felky, on your well-deserved adminship! JOHN COLLISON 21:03, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, guys...now, off to some vandal-hunting :P -- Ferkelparade π 23:13, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, congratulations! I'm setting fire to a vandal's toes in your honour tonight. --fvw* 00:54, 2004 Dec 11 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Misplaced Pages's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to ] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

OR

Option 2
I agree to ] all my contributions to any ], county, or city article as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

City Island

I disagree strongly with your renaming of City Island in the comma style. See Talk:City Island, New York. -- Decumanus 17:59, 2004 Dec 11 (UTC)

I apologize if I maybe moved the article prematurely; as you've already noticed, I performed the move after it was requested on Misplaced Pages:Help desk. Would City Island, Bronx, New York be an acceptable title? -- Ferkelparade π 01:54, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Yes, I think that's the best title really, because the article is more about the neighborhood than the geographical feature. See Talk:City Island, New York. -- Decumanus 02:03, 2004 Dec 12 (UTC)

Current Events

a new day in the (actually I have no idea what you call it, :-) please let me know)

Umm...calendar? :) -- Ferkelparade π 14:43, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Heh, thanks. Must have been a blackout on my part. I was looking for a term for just one month of the calendar but calendar itself didn't come to my mind. --Jpkoester1 15:12, Dec 15, 2004 (UTC)

jammer article

that article really doesnt deserve to be voted on though. quentin jammer is a pretty well known NFL player for san diego. i think that you are under the impression that some high school player made a page about himself. check the san diego chargers article and you'll see his name- Xpendersx 13:59, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

i'll create a jammer stub then.thanks! Xpendersx 14:11, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Schicksalstag

Hi Ferkelparade (whatever this name is supposed to mean), you got me wrong on practically all counts and I'm glad that I can clarify things.

First of all, User:KF/For future reference is for my future reference and therefore does not contain any headers, explanations, or whatever. It is the exact opposite of a to do list—it's a list of articles other people have already written which I find interesting, useful, good, excellent, debatable, funny, eccentric—whatever. I'm not planning to add anything to any of the articles there unless they are stubs.

Secondly, my own writing has been met quite often with exactly that phrase: "How can this ever be NPOV". See, for example, Talk:Losers in literature (now renamed, but I don't remember the new title), Talk:Remake, or Seminal work, which I had expanded greatly and which was considered so POV that it was put on VfD and actually deleted. (You can find a salvaged copy farther down at User:KF/For future reference.) With my comment I was poking fun at Maveric149 et al., not commenting on Schicksalstag. You should let sleeping dogs lie: If a NPOV fanatic discovers your article that may very well be the end of it.

All the best, <KF> 21:23, Jan 4, 2005 (UTC)

MONGO and Bush

I spotted the little edit war on the Bush article. I'll be happy to counter-revert if and when MONGO reverts. This would probably put him in a position where he has to either use other methods of dispute resolution or risk blocking under WP:3RR. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 14:11, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)
