This article is for the expansion for Zoo Tycoon 2. For the expansion pack for Zoo Tycoon, see Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania.

Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania is the latest expansion pack for the Zoo Tycoon 2. It is the fourth expansion of Zoo Tycoon 2, the others being Endangered Species, African Adventure, and the Dino Danger Pack. The expansion focuses around marine animals, as did the Marine Mania expansion for the first Zoo Tycoon game.

Biomes:

Four new biomes have been added to the game:

Besides this, the method of biome layout has been altered, enabling players to filter rocks, plants and trees while laying down the terrain. The game also allows the player to build mixed tank-land exhibits, also called hybrid exhibits. This way, animals like the walrus can come onto land to rest, and go back into the water later, while allowing guests to view the animals both above ground and in the water. Also, players can now dive underwater.

It is worthy of note that all of the new animals go into either the above categories or the Tundra biome.

Animals:

Animals which can perform in shows must be trained first. The players can either train the animals by themselves, or hire animal trainers to do the job for them. Players are also able to swim with certain animals, by 'riding' on them.

Animals can use either a tank or regular exhibit water. Animals like the Rockhopper Penguin, which can use land require a combined land and water exhibit to remain happy, and the turtles need land to lay eggs. Animals which use land will generally accept either the rock or desert islands instead of normal land, and so may be kept in tanks.

Some animals from the original game, like the hippopotamus, polar bear, and the emperor penguin have been updated to swim underwater

Food:

The new food in Marine Mania is placed like normal food, and either floats at the surface or is placed on the tank bottom, depending on the type of food and container. Animals which are able to go on land, like theWalrus and California Sea Lions can eat and drink normal food as well as the new aquatic food.

Trivia

  • Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania was announced in April, along with the Dino Danger Pack and African Adventure, and was highly anticipated ever since.
  • Animals in shows will aim splashes at guests. Under the surface this is modeled a bit like throwing a water balloon. When the “water balloon” bursts it will soak all guests within a certain radius.
  • Hippos, penguins and polar bears were updated to swim underwater, but the crocodile and beaver weren't as Blue Fang says they stay at the surface most of the time.
  • The koi appear to have a ridiculously short lifespan.
  • Marine Mania is the first Zoo Tycoon 2 expansion pack to feature an all-new staff member, the trainer and new biomes.
  • In the files for the benthic biome, there is a file called "benthic domestructure", that looks vaguely like some sort of submarine. There is also one called benthic submarine dock, that shows the exact same picture, but could be hinting that they were planning to put in a new mode of transportation.
  • Also in the files are show backdrops that were apparently never used.
  • Whale sharks are actually purchased as adolecents and grow even larger with time.
  • The narwhal has a very rare variant model where it has two tusks
  • Ambient remoras will attach themselves to other animals.
