The Eastern Security Network (ESN) is a Security outfit set up by the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to protect Eastern Nigeria in face of terrorism and banditry that has overwhelmed the Nigerian State. According to Kanu, during a live Facebook post, ESN was established to defend the people of the Eastern Region from terrorists and bandits allegedly trooping in from the North
IPOB is a movement whose aim is to "restore" the independent state of Biafra, which has been defunct since the 1967-1970 Nigerian Civil War.
History
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB announced the formation of the ESN on December 12, 2020 inwhich the videos and pictures of the men and women of ESN were seen on military like parades and taking of salutes to Nnamdi Kanu. ESN aim according to Nnamdi Kanu is to act as a "regional security force to protect people against Fulani terrorists.
However, the Nigerian government saw the ESN as a threat to its authority. Having failed to nix recurrent Fulani led kidnappings, banditries, raping and destructions of farms of easterners.On 28th January, men of Nigerian armed Police were deployed to attack ESN in Orlu forests. Unfortunately, the attack was repelled by ESN and the Military were deployed to replace the police. The military operation in Orlu saw the death of over six people who died of the army stray bullets. The failure of the Nigerian Army in destroying ESN led to the activation of political means to stop the fracas. On 27th of January, Nnamdi Kanu called for "seize fire" and ordered men and women of ESN back to their camps in the forests for further cleaning up the Eastern forest of Fulani terrorism.
