History

Founded in 1997 by industrial designer Morten Villiers Warren, Native expanded its services beyond industrial design and engineering into digital experience, technology, and strategy. It now offers a full-service innovation practice from research through to technology development and manufacturing for clients across industries including automotive, consumer electronics, telecommunications, computing, biotechnology, FMCG and Internet of things.

Work and Awards

Automotive

Native's relationship with Audi and Bentley begun with developing an HMI for the Audi A8, launched in the A6 model before being deployed across the entire Audi range. The interface was then redesigned for Bentley's Mulsanne luxury saloon.

Ford Motor Company begun working with Native in 2016 to build the Autonomous Vehicle Simulator (AVS). The AVS was a demonstration platform that reimagined transportation choice and business models beyond the SUV. The work generated hundreds of new patents and was honoured the International Design Excellence Gold Award.

Consumer Electronics

The firm's work with Bowers & Wilkins gave rise to industry awards including Red Dot, IDSA and D&AD Silver Pencils for the B&W Ovale 1993, B&W XT 2006, Pressure Vessel Subwoofer 2005, bent wood laminated B&W Nautilus 800, 803, 805 Series 1, 2 & 3 used in Abbey Road Studios, P3, P5 & P7 Headphones and the Zeppelin. The work has been credited with inspiring the 21st century's contemporary shape and iconic sleek aesthetic in audio technology.

Partnership between Native and TomTom re-defined the wayfinding category by creating a unified line-up across the TomTom range. The work was awarded IDEA Gold in 2009 and Design Awards in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016.

Telecommunications

In 2012 BBC worked with Native to redesign their multi-platform (phone, tablet, notebook, and PC formats) multi-modal main website user experience and homepage.

SFR hired Native to build a multichannel digital and physical ecosystem. Called "Select & Connect," the core concept centered around a modular plug-and-play set-top box. As new modules were added, relevant services and home automation systems, across all devices, activated to provide a completely cohesive user experience.

Launched in 10 markets in 2017, VEON worked with Native to release a range of world-firsts in digital top-ups, integrated services and bespoke entertainment integration for over 250 million users across Russia, Kazakhstan, Italy and Pakistan.

Computing

Native began a partnership with Compaq Computers in 2000 that was later acquired by HP. Native built innovations including Q Control TV UX, HP Halo Telepresence UX, and the world's first internet connected printer in 2013 after CEO Meg Whitman called for design unification across the business. Since then, Native and HP's design team, led by Stacy Wolff, have collaborated on several products, including Spectre x360 and Omen.

Biotechnology

Coloplast employed Native in 2010 to create the "Design DNA" to restore dignity and alleviate daily hardships of patients with stoma conditions. "Design DNA" was awarded the Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity and IDEA's Gold and Best in Show awards, making Native the first British design firm to win both. Forbes named Coloplast 3rd in the "Top 25 Most Innovative Companies of 2016"

Native worked with the engineering team of next-generation sequencing company, Illumina, to design the visual language for their equipment, data reporting and supporting literature. Native developed the design and engineering of the NextGen2000 and redesigned the packaging of Illumina's consumables.

Fast Moving Consumer Goods

At the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show, Native and Pernod Ricard launched a digitally connected cocktail maker, the Postable OPN, designed as a direct-to-customer experience for Pernod Ricard's spirits brand made with sustainability and a circular economy in mind.

Internet of Things

Native was tasked to reinterpret Glue's physical and digital offerings with the "Glue Kit." Inclusive of a smart locking system and internal wifi hub, users could lock and unlock their devices from anywhere in the world. Native was then tasked to extend the innovation to their website with a full redesign.

In 2021, Native launched its own IoT consumer technology venture, Zuma Array.
