It is some 4 miles long by 21 broad. Off the island, which was discovered by the Portuguese in the 1400s, are extensive and very dangerous reefs. Arguin was occupied in turn by Portugal, the Netherlands, England, France, and Mauritania; and to Mauritania it now belongs.
