Broadcasting on UHF channel 28, it began life as WNAO-TV, for its owners, the Raleigh News and Observer. In 1978, it changed its call letters to WPTF (the company which now owned it, Durham Life Insurance, had a slogan "We Protect the Family"), which it kept until 1991, when it took on its current call letters.
Currently owned by Sinclair Broadcasting, it was an NBC affiliate from 1962 until 1995, when it switched to the fledgling UPN network.
