Unjustified mass ban of wikipedia accounts including mine with procedures that were not properly followed

Hello,

First, I want to introduce myself, I am a 14 year old teenager who loves wikipedia, specifically I am interest in finance (I am the best of my class at economics), I also like and edit topics like countries of the ex soviet union and the Balkans. I can show you my ID for verification purposes (I will just do so privately and hide the serial number with my finger or a paper so it cannot be used to buy anything online) and I am even ready to go on call and talk as a witness to what happened.

I am now contacting you from another account as my original account which I have been using for a relatively long time has been blocked (I cannot do anything with it and cannot even send a call for help), I was accused of smth known as "sockpuppetry" which is totally fine to suspect me or anyone on wikipedia and then launch an investigation into it but the investigation would have shown my innocence whereas here, me and 6-9 more people were blocked WITHOUT any investigation. Had an actual REAL investigation been conducted, it would have been directly verified that me (and probably the other users) were not sockpuppets.

It is easy to see that me and 6-9 other people are not sockpuppet using simple verifications such as the other people can make edits at the exact same time (exact hour/minute/second), be awaken at different hours and many other ways of verifying. Also, administrators have tools to verify that I am not the other user using tools which are very easy to run and using that admins will see my location. I am sure that even my 11 year old sister could've run such tools but here nobody did it.

Had anyone run that tool, they would've seen that all the time my location will be traced to the country of Belgium as this is where I live and I have never left the country in the past 2 years whereas most of the other users are Indians and Pakistanis and other people around the world, I do not know where they are all from tbh.

Moreover, prior to that, some of these other users were harassed on the talk page because they were new users and someone told them that their votes will not be counted which totally breaks the wikipedia rules !

Had someone actually done their job properly and actually looked into it, they would've seen all of this, instead they believed the lies of one user (idk why he lied) and based on that they blocked a bunch of people all at the same time.

The issue arose because I made a page which for some reason a lot of users found triggering in some way (maybe they had a conflict of interest) but it was just about a company offering financial services and investments which did not go against wikipedia policies in any way, I previously made and edited pages about other financial institutions. In fact, to make sure that I followed all guidelines and in order to do the best job possible, I used WP:NOTE and WP:FIND during my development.

I made the page 2 weeks ago and it seemed alright, I made sure to write in the most grammatically correct way and I followed all the rules and guidelines as I said before but then all of a sudden the page got raided.

After about a week of the page being live, a bunch of users raided it. Mainly, it was Mr Kuru who attacked the page and the other users just repeated after him ( he mainly attacked the references because he said they were paid and a lot of other users kept on repeating after him that "it was paid" without adding any information as though Mr Kuru was a cult leader and the few other users were his cult).

Mr Kuru was also saying very unreasonable things like all sources are incorrect which is not true. All sources could not have been incorrect and not valid at the same time as I was following guidelines. For example he said that a financial article on the official website of the University of British Columbia was paid propaganda but that is not correct. He also mentioned that on that website of the University of British Columbia he saw a lot of other articles and they were all promotional but if you check the website yourself, you will see that there will be no promotional content at all, I mean I have looked around and there is really no such thing on there.

Here is the link, they have even moved the link for some reason but this is the link:

https://canvas.ubc.ca/eportfolios/44157/Home/How_the_appearance_of_the_internet_influenced_financial_markets

Also, the same article was published on the official website of the cybersecurity department of the University of Harvard but the problem was that this specific website was made in the form of an open wiki and so any user could edit it and because of this, a lot of people hid their own links and advertising articles on the Harvard cybersecurity website. I was silly enough to think that content from Harvard university will always be reliable but I did not consider that a freely editable wiki page could be used for evil.

But nonetheless I should not be blocked for committing a mistake of inattention and not even attacked for this. University websites always publish reliable information and they make sure to verify it. I double checked that those were the exact domains for both the university of British Columbia and the University of Harvard (and not fraudulent imitations like with scams) and it was indeed the case, it is just that the website on Harvard reposted the article from british columbia and because their website was freely editable, it was used for advertisement.

Mr Kuru mentioned many unreasonable things such as those, he also said that all the sources I used was paid propaganda but this is not true given that only about 30% of sources were paid releases by companies non related to the company which I wrote the article about. It was just that the company which I was covering was mentioned in those articles and I thought that I should use those references because they were not paid by the company I covered but by a third party. The other references I used were totally relevant as per wikipedia policies and I see them constantly being used on the platform, I mean really regardless of the level of relevance, I see all sorts of sources being used all across wikipedia and I think it is good and needed to use various sources of various opinions (left wing websites and right wing websites) to make a valid balanced article, it is for the wikipedia editor to judge the sources and what is being said in order to write the best possible content and not just blindly copy data from there.

It looked like Mr Kuru lost his mind or he was very tired that day but he was saying smth that does not make sense, it really looked like he was brainwashed and he was saying very unreasonable things.

Because I had a lot of problems and things to do for school, I did not do much of wikipedia this week and forgot to reply and I did not really even think much about it, I kinda forgot. But yesterday, I saw that my account has been blocked for this sockpuppetry which makes me sad and depressed and makes me suffer, I really think it is unfair, it creates a lot of anxiety for me.

If Mr Kuru did not like the sources I used, it is ok, I could have looked for more sources or someone else could have done it but this is not a reason to attack the page (and then block me), I actually think that I did a really good job at making that page, at least in what concerns my work I did because I said everything in the most grammatically correct way and I see all the time badly worded articles being written on wikipedia. I was also editing many things as well as Solomartel before I was blocked and I think I was bringing lots of value to the project.

Then after Mr Kuru, other users were attacked on that talk page who wanted to keep the page which I created because they were new and threatened that their point of view will not be taken into consideration. It is a certain MrOllie who threatened users but Idk specifically which ones. He also opened an investigation of sockpuppetry in which I was included but I did not care and I did not check my account very much this week as I said.

It is perfectly understandable that someone may suspect other users of sockpuppetry but what is strange is that it is the person who attacks other users and threatens them who opens this investigation.

Normally once such a sockpuppetry complaint is made, (just like a complaint at the police), it is meant to be investigated by administrators but it was not investigated at all ! Instead based on lies smth was assumed and me and other users have been blocked !

Instead of the investigation, a user who seemed to be very interested in attacking one user named Murgh Krahi (who commented on the page which I created) lied so that Mr Murgh Krahi was condemned without investigation.

Mr Spicy is this person and he was 100% lying because there are things he said which are totally incorrect and there is no way Mr Spicy could not have known them.

For example, he said that the user Murgh Krahi was a sockpuppeteer and that an investigation against him was conducted many years ago and proved the sockpuppetry. The problem is that if this was indeed the case and Mr Murgh Krahi was found guilty of sockpuppetry back in the days, then he would have directly been blocked and banned then and he would not be able to edit wikipedia and comment on the page I have created like he did but because Murgh Krahi was able to post his comments on my page, it means that Mr Murgh Krahi was found innocent of the sockpuppetry complaint of many years ago.

Mr Spicy used a similar accusation against a user named Anjum Sharjeel.

He used the investigation led about Murgh krahi of his alleged sockpuppeteerness but had this investigation yielded the result that she/he was a sockpupeteer, Mr Murgh Krahi would already not be part of wikipedia a long time ago (or any other project of meta wiki) so this means that the result of the investigation was negative yet Spicy used it as an argument to get me and multiple other users blocked so clearly his actions were deceitful and machevelian.

One thing I do want to mention is that I am a person living in Belgium and I speak french, English, Russian and Serbian whereas most people interested and having commented on that page are from India and Pakistan where this company seems to be particularly known in. Another user is a user who said he translates the encyclopedia from english to Italian and vice versa, even if we were to consider this, how is it possible that the same user who is a sockpupetteer could speak both french, english, Russian, Serbian, English, Indian, Pakistani and Italian at the same time.

This is just impossible and had the administrators actually investigated it, they would've right away seen that the likelyhood of such a person existing is close to 0. To prove my point, I would even agree to go on call and would invited the other users to do the same, this is how such problems should be resolved I think.

Another argument Mr Spicy used to lie in the investigation was that all accounts commenting were either users that were inactive for a long time or new users but I know this is a lie because my account is not recent and Have not been inactive also I am sure it is the same thing for the other users, I am almost sure that Mr Spicy lied. Plz verify this.

Also, other users on there were suspecting Mr Kuru and Mr MrOllie of sockpuppetry because they were all saying the same thing or giving the same arguments. Initially I did not agree with them but now I think it may be the case because I was just blocked without investigation and Mr spicy lied to falsify the investigation.

One thing that makes these claims even more absurd is that most users commenting about that company were from India or Pakistan (if I am not mistaken) and I am always located and connected from Belgium, if you use administrator tools to track me down you will see that my location and all the devices and everytime I have been connected will always be tracked back to Belgium as I have never left the country for the past 2 years so all the accusations and this condemnation is baseless, someone just needs to actually verify and they will see instead of believing liars.

I am even ready to go on call to prove who I am and invite all other people who were blocked to do the same and so we can clearly and transparently see that they are real people.

I am contacting you because you are an administrator and I want to ask to start an actual investigation as I know that I am innocent and the investigation will 100% show it.

Also, once the investigation will be finished and my innocence will be proven, I would ask that my real account because be unblocked as I have tons of achievements and edits on that one, I do not want to lose it, also, I was developing friendships and good relations on that account, I would not want to lose them and now if I contact users from this account they will now think it is now another person with a similar name. So I really want fairness and my account to be unblocked. It would be the best Christmas gift for me that my innocence is proven and my account is restored.

Plz help me, the loss of my account is really making me depressed and sad and it is really unfair.

I want to give all the information so you can conduct the investigation:

The name of my account is @@SUPERGTOR:

The page is Solomartel

The users are Spicy, Kuru, MrOllie, Njd-de you can easily see it by going to the page Solomartel and seeing the edits made to it and the harassment on the talk page for the deletion of the page.

I thank you very much in advance for your help and I really apologize if I contact many administrators, I am not trying to spam I just need help and I do not know who is active and who can help me with this.

On the Mall

You previously (in 2007) removed a brief article on Edwin Franko Goldman's "On the Mall" march. Nonetheless, this march is famous with marching bands, and it is the most well known composition by Goldman. Will you approve another attempt to create an article on that march? Rammer (talk) 03:39, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Sure, I have no objection at all; in fact an article on the subject would be welcomed. The only reason the previous version was deleted was because it had two sentences with no context at all, so wasn't intelligible even as a stub. --Delirium (talk) 10:17, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
All right. I'll see about the need. My personal sense on article length is that even a short article should have at least THREE sentences, meaning a beginning, a middle, and an end. Don't get on an airplane unless it has a nose, a fuselage, and a tail. Rammer (talk) 21:29, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Carl Bock

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Carl Bock requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Mentoz86 (talk) 13:57, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Misplaced Pages community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for creating all these articles! Yeah, I find adding coordinates enjoyable as downtime now and then between "real" work. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WikiProject Wildfire

Information icon

Hello! I have recently started a new WikiProject and am trying to recruit new members. The project, WikiProject Wildfire, focuses on articles that relate to wildfires. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. From updating templates, to classifying and improving articles. Any level of commitment is welcome! If you care to just add some input on the founding of the new project, awesome. If you would like to take an active role in editing articles, that is awesome as well! Knowledge of wildfires is NOT a prerequisite for joining the project. In fact, it would be great to have some members of the project who are NOT fire-buffs. That way we make sure that articles aren't just written by and for people in the fire community. If this is something you have any interest in, I would love to have you join the project! Please feel free to join the discussion or leave me a message on my talk page. (Note that you are receiving this message from me because I saw you made multiple edits on a wildfire related page, specifically Old Fire. Not just spamming you at random.) Hope you have a great day! Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Delirium. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of H.E.R.R.

The article H.E.R.R. has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability: does not meet WP:NBAND. Only one member is notable (and not as a musician), failing criterion #5. No sources listed and no RS could be found.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Misplaced Pages:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:43, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Delirium.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. Rivier

Good evening Delirium, I've come here because of an article that has been suggested for deletion in the German Misplaced Pages: de:Rivier. Over there, some argue that the term rivier would not actually be a specific term for dry river beds in Namibia but that it would signify nothing more than river (as it does in Afrikaans, see af:Rivier). Now, we have found that the Namibian German which was used in colonial times actually did borrow the term rivier from Afrikaans and did narrow its meaning from river to dry river (bed). But the question remains if this actually established a general regional term or not. I am writing all this because a long time ago :), you wrote the magic sentence Rivier can mean Wadi, dry riverbed, called rivier in southwest Africa. Do you remember the source of your information back then? The word rivier does pop up in English texts, but in my impression only occasionally. Do you have any more information on that? That would be tremendous. Thanks and best regards, --Andropov (talk) 20:02, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Andropov! Surprisingly enough I was able to remember why I wrote that disambiguation page. I had previously written Tsauchab, which used the term, so I wanted somewhere for the link to go. Alas, I don't think I had an especially solid source. I was in fact translating a German Misplaced Pages article originally: the initial version of Tsauchab was largely a translation of what used to be at de:Tsauchab, though that edit history has since ended up at de:Sesriem-Canyon due to a page move. In that version, the German Misplaced Pages described it as a rivier and linked to de:rivier, the article now in question for deletion, which then, like now, claimed it was a Namibia-specific term. I naturally looked it up on the English Misplaced Pages to see if it was also used in English. There was at the time no English article at rivier, but the article wadi did at the time have this sentence: In southwestern Africa, the term rivier is used. I think between that sentence, and doing a little poking around on Google Books, I convinced myself that people did call the Tsauchab a rivier in English and that it meant something close enough to wadi to be worth having a disambiguation page at rivier linking to wadi. But I don't remember specifically which books I would've run across on Google Books. In any case, since then, all three articles in question (en:wadi, en:Tsauchab, and de:Tsauchab) have been edited to remove the term, so the disambiguation makes less sense now (unless you manage to turn up a better source!). --Delirium (talk) 20:38, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
Wow, thank you so much for this very precise recollection! Unfortunately, I have not found much more in English texts. But I will have another, more thorough look around and will report any incidents back to you :) Kind regards and thanks again, --Andropov (talk) 22:54, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
Not that I have found much more, but you might be interested in the thorough (yet not exhaustive) list another user prepared of the various terms used worldwide for dry rivers/intermittent rivers at de:Benutzer Diskussion:W!B:#Namen für Trockenflüsse (see also this PDF (p. 206) as the main source). The article de:Rivier has been saved from deletion today, but as of yet it remains to be seen if it can be expanded again. Best regards, --Andropov (talk) 22:55, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Delirium, ranting, and other delusions

Please note my ranting at Talk:Metropole#Globalize. Your comment combined with the actual situation revealed from the page history hit a sore nerve. There is a second-level of vandalism continuing here at Misplaced Pages. That vandalism is the cumulative effects of ill-disciplined, ignorant, uncaring, artless fumblers who yet still believe they know everything. My rant has everything to do with the damage that such 'editors' do to WP. I've been freaking about this for awhile (see User:Shenme). The wine will not be drinkable with catarrhal diarrheal elephants stomping the grapes here. (Is there a group here similar to the old alt.sysadmin.recovery ?) Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:15, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:1526 BC deaths

A tag has been placed on Category:1526 BC deaths requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
