Proposed Edits
Hello! I would potentially like to add a section to this page. Due to Burkina Faso having some of the highest levels of poverty in Africa, a rapidly-growing population, recurrent natural disasters, and the fact that it is landlocked, food insecurity rates in Burkina Faso remain consistently high. I think this article could benefit from a section discussing issues with food security. If you would like to see my sources, feel free to check out my page! Courtwang (talk)
I am planning on discussing 3 main subtopics under "food security." First would be "Current Statistics" where I would provide information on the amounts of people suffering from food insecurity and health issues from that. Next is "Causes of Food Insecurity" in which I would include Geographic and Demographic causes, and Agriculture, Environmental Causes, and Household Income. Finally, I would include a section on "Approaches to Reducing Food Insecurity" in which I would talk about what organizations are doing such as the World Bank and the World Food Programme.
Here is a link to my full proposal. Courtwang (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2015 (UTC) https://docs.google.com/a/rice.edu/document/d/1EVanElRiCajsSQ4Tq4ZuWhpOFdVuTJFNx7K37Owu-ho/edit?usp=sharing
- Hi Courtwang, your new edits to the Food Insecurity section seem great. However, I do think you could do more by adding more information concerning the causes of Burkina Faso's food insecurity, like climate, civil unrest, or government policies. Including information about specific geographical areas where the food insecurity is particularly severe or information about the history of food insecurity in Burkina Faso might also be helpful. It would be nice to see some more peer-reviewed articles in your citations, and make sure all of your statistics are properly cited.
- I also think you could add more varied viewpoints in your subsection on "By the World Food Programme" in order to uphold a neutral point of view. It might help to talk about the actual effectiveness of the World Food Programme's programs.
- Also make sure all of your information is relevant to food insecurity (you have a couple facts that actually relate more to access to medical care), and a couple pictures would really enhance your article. Otherwise, great job! Azhao96 (talk) 22:08, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Courtwang - Here are my recommendations for this section. Be sure to define food security, even though you do provide a link to the separate page on the topic. Also, I would recommend expanding on the causes and background of how food security became an issue in Burkina Faso. I would also include the academic perspectives on the approaches to food security, rather than just the programs that exist. The statistics are great, and I think they provide a good sense of what the context of food security is like there. Keep up the good work! Dmaldonado08 (talk) 16:07, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi again - Here are some tips for continuing to improve your section on food insecurity. Make sure to weed out redundant information in your section. It would also be great if you could expand on the structural causes of the global food crisis and the natural disasters that contribute to food insecurity. Additionally, it could be helpful to break up the causes of food insecurity in to separate social, economic, and environmental causes or something like that. Great job on your new contribution to this article! Dmaldonado08 (talk) 22:45, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Courtwang! Overall very good and comprehensive section on food security, however I would make sure you clarify a few things particularly what the Global Hunger Index is. There are a few instances in your section where you talk about something without defining first what that thing is which can make it more difficult to follow if you don't already know what is being discussed. Anyway, overall a very good section! Abergin13 (talk) 00:05, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
Renewable energy
Can this article be updated and rewritten in light of the 5th UN Assembly on the very ambitious Sustainable development goals (17 goals and 169 targets), which require that we build ecological sustainability into social and economic equity of the SDGs? Access to energy sources is a precondition for development and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, which are being superseded by the "post-2015" Sustainable development goals. SNV Burkina Faso notes two work areas of emphasis:
- Agriculture: Targeting renewable energy as a key constraint in agribusiness development, working on agriculture residues , with a view to leadership and literacy training in new value-added to renewable energy technologies and value chain development.
- WaSH: how to relate toilets and biodigesters, solar pumps, etc.
SNV, an international not-for-profit development organization based in The Netherlands, works in under-developed and resource-poor nations around the world.

New Changes
You have added a very important and good component to the Burkina Faso page, especially in regards to the causes of food security. I recommend also focusing more on the direct impacts of the lack of food security. It is well done, however, and the only thing I would change in format is the capitalization. Misplaced Pages guidelines make it so subsequent words after the first in a section title are lowercase.DCirillo14 (talk) 00:35, 5 November 2015 (UTC)DCirillo14

Burkina Faso (1983–1987)
Shouldn’t this period be separated and put into its own article, since the socialist period has a Infobox it wouldn’t be too hard to shift it. I also think it’s a bit awkward to have two country Infoboxes on the same page. Bvcitizen (talk) 23:17, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Separate article for 1984–1987
Does anyone here think we should separate the 1984–1987 era Burkina Faso into a new article??
French Union: was Upper Volta a department?
The section "From colony to independence" says of the French Union that "he French designated its colonies as departments of metropolitan France on the European continent." But the article on the French Union suggests that this was true only of Algeria, and partially true the "old colonies" in the West Indies which become "overseas departments". The other African colonies are described as "overseas territories".
