Doctor Nefarious Tropy (ドクター エヌ トロピー, Dokutā Enu Toropī), commonly shortened to N. Tropy, is a fictional character from Crash Bandicoot.
N. Tropy is the self-proclaimed master of time and quantum warp technology. He seems to be an acquaintance of Uka Uka, called upon the latter to help take over the world in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. He can be seen causing time paradoxes for laughs.
Tropy is, needless to say, a nefarious and smug character as opposed to the short temper of Doctor Cortex, with a smooth British accent to match. He appears to be the smartest out of all the doctors, but he tends to get frustrated when he repeatedly misses his target, and as a result tires easily. This usually works to Crash's advantage and results in Tropy's many defeats to the hands of the bandicoot.
Tropy's invention, the Time Twister, also appears to be his base of operations. However, it was destroyed at the end of Warped, and Nefarious Tropy's base now appears to be Hyperspace, which he shares with Uka Uka.
N. Tropy's main weapon is a large silver fork that can produce fireballs, lasers and blue waves.
He is voiced by the British voice actor Michael Ensign in all his appearances except The Wrath of Cortex, where he was voiced by Corey Burton. He is voiced by Masaru Ikeda in the Japanese dub of the games.
Appearance
N. Tropy's skin is of a light blue color. He has long eyebrows and two equally long and skinny beards, giving him a vaguely Asian appearance. He wears a golden-brown, smog-producing, piston-driven time machine, which appears to obscure his lab coat. He wears a tall hat with a small silver fork (similar to the one he carries) on top and a small clock on the front. Lastly, his legs are long and skinny.
Appearances in video games
N. Tropy made his debut in Warped as the third boss in the game. Upon his defeat, the Time Twister Machine fell into disarray, trapping Cortex, Tropy, and Uka Uka in a time prison and morphing the first two into infants.
N. Tropy plays a minor role in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, in which he attends Uka Uka's bad guy convention. He acts as an obstacle throughout the levels in the game.
In Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced, N. Tropy is entrusted by Uka Uka with the with the task of aiding him in universal domination. To do this, N. Tropy kidnaps Coco and Crunch, as well as Fake Crash, who he believes to be the real Crash. He then enlists N. Trance to hypnotise them into joining him. However, Crash manages to turn the bandicoots back to normal, before defeating N. Trance and N. Tropy.
N. Tropy's latest appearance was in Crash Twinsanity as the fifth boss alongside Doctor Nitrus Brio when they, using the vast resources from Doctor N. Gin's company, hunted for treasure. They were easily thwarted by Spyro the Dragon. It seems now that N. Tropy is no longer working aside the likes of Cortex, but instead working with N. Brio and N. Trance, although still on the same side as Uka Uka.
In the cart racing games, Crash Team Racing and Crash Nitro Kart, N. Tropy is master of the relic races, and can be unlocked by beating all his ghosts in Time Trial mode.
N.Tropy has a cameo appearance in Crash Boom Bang! in the "Silhouette Quiz" minigame.
Trivia
- Tropy is one of the few charaters who wears armour the whole time.
- N. Tropy's theme tune in Crash Bandicoot: Warped consisted almost entirely of synthesizers, with a prominent wood block digitally altered to make it play different notes.
- In Nitro Kart, he, Pura, and Fake Crash are the only unlockable characters in the game who aren't seen in the cutscenes.
- His name is spelled 'N Trophy' in the credits for Wrath Of Cortex.
- Dr. Nefarious from the Insomniac game Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal is possibly named after N. Tropy.
- Additionally, the abbreviation of his name (N. Tropy) means chaos, randomness, and disorder (entropy), a common term in chemistry.
